  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Then you are an anarchist if you have no confidence in the rule of law and court system.

But you are not a lone since it has all now been contaminated since Citizens United.
You missed the sarcasm font.

Appeals court says DOJ cannot represent Trump in appeal of E. Jean Carroll case

While that would have been ghastly, it's bad enough that my taxes paid for the effort to find out whether my taxes would pay for his appeal.

DOJ lawyers had argued that since some of Trump's alleged conduct fell within the scope of his role as president, the Justice Department should be able to defend the president in court.

The NY Courts have had it with Trump.

NY Taxpayers are tired of dealing with his tax fraud and lawsuits.

He will lose.
I hope so. The old guy needs to learn that he can’t do anything he wants and get away with it.

Appeals court rejects Trump's bid to challenge $5 million E. Jean Carroll judgment [This is separate from the $83 million judgment.]

Trump had sought a hearing before the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit after a three-judge panel declined to overturn the judgment.
A federal appeals court in New York on Thursday officially affirmed the jury verdict that found President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming the writer E. Jean Carroll, starting the clock for Trump to ask the Supreme Court to overturn the decision and its order that he pay her $5 million in damages.

The 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals issued the mandate affirming the verdict weeks after that same court rejected a bid by Trump to have the full judicial lineup in the circuit rehear his appeal of the 2023 Manhattan federal court jury verdict. [the above]

I didn't see that in any Australian outlet. Just to note that we have reached a point when 'Court finds yet again that US President sexually assaulted woman' isn't deemed newsworthy.

“Free speech” costs $83M if used to defame another person.
Plus the $5M from the first time he did it and got sued successfully. Some people don't learn.

Appeals court upholds $83 million judgment against Trump for defaming E. Jean Carroll

"Trump has failed to identify any grounds that would warrant reconsidering our prior holding on presidential immunity. We also conclude that the district court did not err in any of the challenged rulings and that the jury's damages awards are fair and reasonable," the opinion said.
Then he was wrong and should pay. perhaps he could use some of the funds that major media has had to pay him....

Yes, he was wrong in saying that he didn't sexually assault her. Good to know that it's finally being accepted.
Whatever helps you pat yourself on the back.

It always has been accepted by me personally - your mind reading machine seems to be on the blink - But aren't you happy!

That the man behind the Resolute Desk effectively raped a woman? How does a country reach a point when you can not only vote for someone like that but support whatever he does? Australia isn't that exceptional, but if a politician just said some of the things that Trump has, let alone done them, then his career would be over immediately.

How has America reached this point? What would he actually have to do before you rejected him as the person who is meant to represent your country? Kill someone?

That the man behind the Resolute Desk effectively raped a woman?
Are we speaking of Trump, Clinton or JFK?
How does a country reach a point when you can not only vote for someone like that but support whatever he does?
His policies are separate from his personal issues. He is a womanizer, braggart and who knows what ugliness he has - the majority of the vote went to him because he was better than Kamala for the country. People in the US have the ability to see what is best for the nation, and he was and is the best.

It's not our fault the Democratic Party did not have anyone that could defeat the 34 time - count them! - 34 time convicted felon who has major issues. The alternative was worse.
Australia isn't that exceptional, but if a politician just said some of the things that Trump has, let alone done them, then his career would be over immediately.
You are correct - Australia is not that exceptional.

I mean just look recently:
  • Robodebt Scheme: An unlawful automated debt recovery program that targeted welfare recipients, leading to a royal commission and widespread condemnation.
  • Scott Morrison’s Secret Ministries: The former PM secretly appointed himself to multiple ministerial roles during the pandemic, sparking outrage over transparency and accountability.
  • Sports Rorts & Travel Scandals: Misuse of taxpayer funds for partisan gain or personal luxury—like Bronwyn Bishop’s infamous helicopter ride—have repeatedly stirred public anger.
or how about:

    • Barnaby Joyce Affair (2018)Then-Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce faced public backlash after it was revealed he had an extramarital affair with a former staffer, Vikki Campion, who later became pregnant. The scandal led to his resignation and prompted the introduction of a “bonk ban” prohibiting ministers from having sexual relationships with staff.
    • Brittany Higgins Allegation (2021)
Former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins alleged she was raped by a colleague inside Parliament House in 2019. Her story ignited a national reckoning on sexual harassment and workplace safety in politics, leading to protests, inquiries, and calls for reform.
    • Christian Porter Accusation (2021)
The then-Attorney General was accused of historical rape by a woman who later died by suicide. Porter denied the allegations and launched a defamation suit against the ABC, which was later settled. He eventually resigned from politics.
    • Alan Tudge Allegations (2021–2022)
The former Education Minister was accused by a former staffer of emotional and physical abuse during a consensual affair. A review found insufficient evidence to support the claims, but the controversy led to his stepping down from cabinet and eventual exit from politics.
No - Australians do not have higher moral ground - thanks for mentioning it.
How has America reached this point? What would he actually have to do before you rejected him as the person who is meant to represent your country? Kill someone?
Nope - it is simpler than that - Bring someone who is better.

They didn't have to pay him - they capitulated because they had upcoming mergers that he could've have interfered with.

Trump sued CBS News and its parent company, Paramount Global, for allegedly deceptively editing a “60 Minutes” interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris, which he claimed amounted to election interference.

• Outcome: The case led to a settlement exceeding $16 million, marking a major win for Trump and sparking debate over media ethics and editorial practices.

Yes, it was a ridiculous, meritless claim. Had it gone to court it would have been thrown out. But with the administration controlling mergers, they didn't want to chance messing that up, so they settled. The merger went through last month, so that gamble paid off.
