You can still read her books. Just don't believe her "prosperity/wealth" theology because it's not biblical.

It's ok to read other denomination books. I have many, many Orthodox prayer books and theology books, as well as Anglican, Episcopal, Methodist, Congregational, Presbyterian/Reformed, and Lutheran books as well.

Reading a lot makes one informed.

I dont think I can come up with any prosperity gospel talk in the books of Meyer’s I’ve read.

Oh, ok. What defines a charismatic? I took a Life in the Spirit course at my church years ago and during one part of it they were speaking in tongues. I am not into that.

That's often a characteristic of charismatics, they're basically pentecostals with fewer rules. I had a stint around charismatic evangelicals years before I became Catholic and it was awful. They all believe they have the power to prophesy, and one guy "prophesied" that my mom was going to die soon so I should spend more time with her (I spend a lot of time with my parents, we're not estranged), that was ~16 years ago and my mom is still alive and well.

Some of the more radical charismatic groups like what you find at Bethel Church get into demonic things like people crawling around on the ground making animal noises, collapsing where they stand like an imploding skyscraper, laughing uncontrollably, and a lot of other bizarre behaviors that they all attribute to the touch of the Holy Spirit.

It's bled into Catholicism now too, and while it's ever-so-slightly more measured because Catholicism has structure, it's still dangerous and I'm wary of people who get involved in it.

I never heard it in a Catholic setting before. I thought it was only Pentecostals and denominations like that.

At least they don’t do that weird stuff during Mass. I have a friend who sometimes speaks in tongues, like when she was at the Life in the Spirit class and I asked her what she was saying and even she didn’t know. But she firmly believe she was praying…..something.

Yeah it was beyond bizarre. If this were the deep south they probably would be handling snakes.

At least they don’t do that weird stuff during Mass. I have a friend who sometimes speaks in tongues, like when she was at the Life in the Spirit class and I asked her what she was saying and even she didn’t know. But she firmly believe she was praying…..something.

No but they do seem to have a more lax attitude towards right belief. The priest that presided over my wedding Mass and baptized my first born is a charismatic priest. While I love him to death and think the Masses he celebrated were generally ok, he still opened the door for things that I don't think belonged like praise music. Granted, that's not an issue exclusive to charismatics but they due tend to be more "hippy" as Catholics go.

Probably in the 70s, which IIRC is when that movement emerged in protestantism as well
