Delivering a speech in Germany, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized European governments for suppressing free speech and discriminating against Christians. He urged leaders across Europe to reverse the ongoing crackdown on conservative voices and religious freedoms.

In his address at the Munich Security Conference in Munich on Friday, Vance noted that conservatives have been investigated, arrested, prosecuted or fined for protesting abortion and posting views on social media.

He also criticized attempts to exclude populist parties from political collaboration, saying they pose a threat to democracy.

I saw a video of the speech. It went over like a lead balloon. Only his own aides clapped. He didn't convince anyone to his side.

The Vance goes to visit extreme right wing politicians.

US Vice President JD Vance, taking the stage in Munich, to eviscerate totalitarianism in Europe. But not in Moscow, especially after its savage invasion of Ukraine. Instead, in Ukraine’s allies in the European Union. The “enemy within”, as he called it, in Europe, is jailing opponents, and afraid of its own voters.....
First up was the suggestion Romania’s recently annulled presidential vote was somehow a bid to deny voters their choice. To be clear, Romania annulled only the first round of a presidential vote last year in which a far-right, pro-Russian candidate very narrowly won a place in a second-round run-off, because courts agreed with evidence from Romania’s intelligence agencies that there had been significant interference from Russia. Vance was objecting to the rule of law in Romania, and pro-Russian sentiment and electoral interference being tackled....
Vance said “old entrenched interests” were “hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation.” To be clear, many in the room would have hailed from the brutal occupation of the former Soviet Union. They didn’t need to be lectured on how authoritarianism spouts falsehood to excuse the poor and cruel governance of the minority.
Germany’s defense minister, Boris Pistorius, quickly replied Vance’s words were “unacceptable.” He opposed “the impression that Vice President Vance has created that minorities are being suppressed or silenced in our democracy. We know not only against whom we are defending our country, but also for what.”...
But the real figure looming large across the room he feverishly addressed was Kremlin head Vladimir Putin. The sins the audience and Europe were accused of are, in reality, occurring in Russia. Putin was not mentioned. Ukraine was only mentioned fleetingly. The bad guys were the United States’ own allies. And the real threat to Western democracy was itself.
It should not take an extensive grasp of history to know it is ugly to talk this way in Munich. Europe has been here before. As George Orwell said as the dust of the last big land war settled in 1949, the “final most essential command” of the Party was to “reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.” Vance asked for that, and made it sound like a virtue.

This year's Munich Security Conference (MSC) was supposed to be primarily about two things: how to end the war in Ukraine without giving in to Russia, and how Europe needed to boost its spending on defence.
But the most senior American present, US Vice President JD Vance, used his time at the podium to talk about neither.
Instead, he shocked delegates on Friday by roundly attacking Washington's allies, including Britain, in a blistering attack decrying misinformation, disinformation, and the rights of free speech.
It was a very weird 20 minutes - one met largely with silence from delegates in the hall.
Even a joke, "if American democracy can survive 10 years of [climate campaigner] Greta Thunberg scolding, you guys can survive a few months of Elon Musk", failed to raise a single laugh.
He accused European governments of retreating from their values, and ignoring voter concerns on migration and free speech.
Vance's speech went down very badly - unequivocally badly. It was extraordinarily poorly judged.

BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday blasted Vice President JD Vance for his support of the far right in the country that gave rise to Adolf Hitler, accusing the American vice president of interfering in domestic affairs less than 10 days before national elections.

Vance’s denunciation of efforts by the German establishment to keep the far right out of power sparked a wave of condemnation from senior officials and pundits, some of whom saw a U.S. administration actively promoting political extremism in the West.
Vance on Friday used a major security conference in Munich to criticize the country’s political fire wall: the post-World War II agreement by mainstream parties to block the far right from being part of any government. Vance punctuated his point by later meeting with Alice Weidel, the co-leader of the anti-migrant Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, which is polling in second place. The AfD denies being a far-right party but is classified by German intelligence as a suspected extremist group. One of the party’s most polemic figures has been convicted and fined for using a banned Nazi slogan.

A British Army veteran and father-of-two has spoken of his gratitude to U.S. Vice President JD Vance for highlighting his conviction for silent prayer in a speech to world leaders in which the American leader warned that free speech is "in retreat" in Europe.

Adam Smith-Connor was convicted last October of breaching an abortion clinic buffer zone in Bournemouth, England, by praying silently. He was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £9,000 ($11,335).

Addressing world leaders at a security conference in Munich on Friday, Vance drew attention to the 51 year old's conviction by saying "perhaps most concerning, I look to our very dear friends, the United Kingdom, where the backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons, in particular in the crosshairs."

All Britain has done is prevent medical clinics from being a place of harassment of people seeking services. People can pray at home, they don't need to block medical clinics to do so.

Vance lecturing Europe on democratic values is a national disgrace. European leaders reject inverted fascism as much as they reject its traditional manifestations, and for good reason.

Free speech is definitely under attack in Germany.

If the speech involves promoting murderous ideologues like fascism by inciting hatred of groups of people, it should be prohibited, especially in Germany. Or are we forgetting that Hitler used demagoguery, hatred, and lies to propel himself to power?

That ain't what is happening in Germany.

"dummy", "hope that helps". This is the kind of juvenile language that pollutes this website. It's not appropriate for the VP or any politician.

I disagree. When someone says something that is obviously stupid, then I don't have a problem when someone else calls them a "dummy."

It's just childish name calling. Showing conclusively something is stupid is sufficient. In, let's say a tennis match the players shake hands and the loser normally shakes the umpire's hand first. The winner doesn't say "ha ha I beat you, you loser". The scoreboard is enough.

Banning AP from the White House does attack free speech self evidently, as does Musk saying journalists he doesn't like should be in jail.

In a few short weeks, Musk has become the most vicious media-basher of the Trump administration, sometimes going even further than President Trump has.

He has attacked a Wall Street Journal journalist who broke news about a DOGE staffer’s racist and eugenic remarks, saying the journalist should be “fired immediately.” He has argued that taxpayer-funded media outlets like Radio Free Europe should be shut down, disparaging the workers as “radical left crazy people.” And he has pushed conspiracy theories about media outlets committing “crimes” without any specifics.
