  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1853 in the CCC as posted and;

1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother."132 The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.

1859 Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God's law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart133 do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.
Bearing witness of a truth is is not a sin; warning the brothers about a false witness endorsing idolatry committed by a man who is arguably a counterfeit himself, is not a sin it is a virtue. Is this not what John the Baptist did, calling out king Herod for his sins?

Bearing false witness is.

Judgement of the Pope bearing false witness is a mortal sin. Knowing you're
committing a venial sin but commit it anyway, raises the level to being grave
and mortal.

Enough of this, Jim. Your tenacious comfort with your theology is clear. Keep watching and listening, is my parting advice.

I mean, they're both allowed to share their perspective, eh?

They both have but there is a bit of a double standard going on isn’t there?

It’s perfectly okay to disagree with the Holy Father while still respecting the office. He is not infallible and the bottom line is he is exercising his free will to say- do as I say not as I do. Double standard.

Homan should have taken a gentler approach if he wanted to give constructive criticism to be honest. Saying that the Catholic Church is “a mess” could have one doing a double take thinking he is a Protestant. Yes, there are things going on in the Church, but the gates of Hades shall not prevail. We must pray.

Is a pope so impeccable that he cannot bear false witness? I seem to remember a picture of pope Francis actually going to confession. He might not think he is impeccable.

I guess I'm late to the party.

I only mentioned it because I often feel exasperated by this pope too. I have come to the conclusion that he is one of many bad popes in the history of the Church and I must endure it with the rest of us. So I'm trying to remind myself to respect the person even when I don't particularly want to.

I can agree to a certain extent.

It’s hard for me to call him “bad” when they’re has been Popes who committed horrible atrocities. Pope Benedict IX- who was elected around age 11, and was Pope 3 (!) times comes to mind.

This pope may not have committed atrocities. He does seem to excuse and enable atrocious people though. He has made an absolute mess of the Church and doesn't seem to have a firm grasp on his personal doctrine either.

He seems to be a bit of what is called a waffler. Something that really bothers me. Always trying to please all sides. No direct answers or explanations. Yet he seems to be very public about his confusing witness. No clarification for the faithful. I admire many things he has said and done but he tends to do a lot of things that cancel that. It’s almost like he is trying to shepherd the world instead and I’ve still not figured that out. Yeah we are supposed to be the light in a dark world but we are not called to compromise the truth.
