Federal watchdogs give DOGE a North Star in quest to slash wasteful federal spending​

Dozens of inspectors general toil away in federal agencies every day, spotting waste, mismanagement and just plain bad decision-making, all of which ends up in dry reports that collect dust in government archives.

They may now provide a blueprint for President-elect Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency. The commission, which Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are to run, will be tasked with slashing hundreds of billions of dollars from the federal budget.

“You’re going to have a situation where Elon Musk and his investigators start with a library of known government documents on government failures,” said Grover Norquist, president of the conservative Americans for Tax Reform. “There’s a lot of stuff out there that simply needs to see the light of day.”

Elon Musk says DOGE probably won’t find $2 trillion in federal budget cuts​

Musk told political strategist Mark Penn ... that he thought there was only a “good shot” at cutting half that.

Musk’s lowered estimate is a significant downgrade from his earlier view. At a rally for Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York on Oct. 27, Musk said he’d be able to cut the federal budget by “at least $2 trillion.”

This week, it put out a request for software engineers and information security engineers for full-time roles, advising applicants to send over “a few bullet points demonstrating exceptional ability” along with their cellphone numbers. On X, some users have listed their IQ scores in replies to Musk and DOGE and said they included them in their applications.

It's unknown who is paying the salaries of the new employees.....

• Establishing the “Department of Government Efficiency.” The order reorganizes and renames the United States Digital Service as the United States DOGE Service.

From latter link: It provides consultation services to federal agencies on information technology. It seeks to improve and simplify digital service, and to improve federal websites.

In the executive order renaming USDS, President Donald Trump ordered every agency to create a DOGE team of at least four employees in consultation with USDS to implement the president's DOGE agenda.
