London's Woke: Is the largest city in the UK going too far?

Hello folks. You guys know me, I am a moderate (still pro-environment here, but not a fan of abortion or trans stuff) who is not a fan of the left or the right at the moment. What are your thoughts on London, UK becoming woke? For myself, I feel that the whole world has gone either too woke, or on the other end, too conservative.

The most anti-woke age group appears to be the over-65s – a full 50 per cent of them believe the capital is too woke. The second-highest figure is among those aged 35-44. I've been "woke" before it's even a thing. It was originally meant for the healing of society.

Unfortunately, when mainstream media took over, they took the woke movement to the extreme with potentially negative outcomes. Maybe they intend to do it to demonize the original woke concept.

Woke is also bringing to surface the rift between the "haves" and "have nots". You can't fault the movement for a problem that is already there since the dawn of civilization.

These problems could have been avoided entirely if only the "haves" displayed real compassion to the disadvantaged instead of blaming them or treating as if they're not entitled to anything. It's sad that even Christians behave with indifference towards the disadvantaged contrary to what Jesus is teaching. Ironically, Jesus is actually putting the blame towards the "haves".

The treatment we give to the least is how we treat the Lord. Matthew 25:40-45

That is true. Old-school woke used to mean aware of current events, and trying to correct issues in society. Now, the far-left has changed the meaning, where LGBT and abortion have taken over society.

We should try to help the poor though.

What would a Texas tv station know about London? Who are these 'respondents'? What is 'woke'? KXAN statistics really cannot be taken seriously about a place 5000 miles from its audience.

London is a very big place with a very diverse population. There are three hundred different language spoken (as a first language).

I do see your point. A Texas TV station would not understand British culture, so you are right. This thread is meant to be a discussion to see what British folks feel about London, if the city is too progressive, or hypothetically, too conservative.

It is good that London is diverse, which means it can be an economic powerhouse in the world, and be able to facilitate business communication around the globe.

Do you realise that London is one of the biggest commercial centres in the world? It has a resident population of almost 10 million with many more commuting daily to work there?

The UK is on the whole very comfortable with many of the issues often described as 'woke' here. There is a broad acceptance of gay relationships and transsexuals. Abortion is in effect available for all women who seek one. Premier League football matches are routinely prefaced with players 'taking the knee'.

We have a newly elected centre left government with policies which in America would be regarded as extreme. The railway companies are to be taken into national ownership. Our National Health Service is popular. A commission is soon to be appointed to formulate a humane approach to assisted dying with a substantial majority of the population broadly in favour of a progressive change in the law.

While nominally a christian country there is no actual majority for any specific religion with a (probable) majority professing none.

I wanted to see if someone could make the most innocuous topic of quantum physics woke, and apparently, that is possible. Man, this was from 2019, and it goes to show that even the late 2010s had issues.

I go to London from time to time. I have not found that it has deteriorated.

London is generally a tolerant place, as is the whole of the United Kingdom. We have all sorts here (as does every part of the world). They are not persecuted any more. I am proud that our laws have progressed beyond the sanctions which punished homosexual relations. I am proud of the fact that same sex marriage has been legalised.

Openly gay people are now free to take their full part in our civic and cultural life and we are much the richer for it.

I have never seen the word 'woke' used in a neutral way; it always carries a pejorative meaning and is now a routine right-wing trope among American English speakers.

As soon as I see the word woke, I immediately could not care about what will come next since rhe word was coopted and nobody who uses it now can give a good definition.

I am glad that being gay is legal in London. It is just when folks push gay stuff in contexts that being gay does not apply to, such as on TV, which bothers me. For myself, I am bi, but at this point, I'd rather be single or with a woman cos the gay stuff has gone too far.

In the past, the word "woke" used to be neutral. Not anymore, that is for sure. The right have taken that word. As a guy in the political center (which would be more center-right in Europe), it is sad what both sides are doing in 2024.
