Do you think it's too late for the GOP? Poor fat old Donald isn't looking/sounding too well lately.

^_^

Fat-shaming and an appeal to cognitive decline. These things would have more weight had Democrats not turned a blind eye to Biden's cognitive issues for so long. However, it is good to see the sudden uptick in interest Democrats have in the cognitive abilities of candidates.

Unfit, mentally and physically.
These things would have more weight had Democrats not turned a blind eye to Biden's cognitive issues for so long.
Why?
However, it is good to see the sudden uptick in interest Democrats have in the cognitive abilities of candidates.
But the Democrats did deal with the issue, if somewhat belatedly. Can the Magadonians do the same? It's not just the Democrats concerned but also us Independents.

You didn't listen to her speech?
Thanks, no. I don't have a lot of patience for political speeches. I can read them okay, but listening? I'd rather not.

Because it comes across as very hypocritical. Had Biden not crashed and burned spectacularly in the June debate, we'd still have people here gaslighting and claiming he was just as sharp as ever. If Democrats were being honest about Biden's mental decline and unfitness for office, they would have allowed for an open primary so that their party could have chosen their candidate rather than having one foisted upon them at the last minute. But that's all water under the bridge now, and I've learned that most Democrats are seemingly quite happy to have their candidates chosen by oligarchs. Maybe in 2028 they'll just skip all of the pretense of primaries and just let the ruling powers dictate their candidate to them.

But the Democrats did deal with the issue, if somewhat belatedly.

Sure, when they had no other option. They kicked Biden to the curb, kicking and screaming. Then they pretended like he was such an honorable man for finally bending to their threats and coercion. So in that regard, I suppose they did "deal with the issue".

Can the Magadonians do the same?

Disenfranchise all of the voters that selected Trump as their candidate? I don't know about that. But this is a weird year, so nothing would surprise me.

It's not just the Democrats concerned but also us Independents.

Well, I'm an independent, so please don't lump me into your talking points. As a registered independent, I think both candidates are absolutely awful. But as is usually the case, tribalism rules the day for both Democrats and Republicans.

I don't think they said he was as sharp as ever, just that he was sharp enough.

It's so cool how you have all the inside info of what really went on.

Yeah, you're right - they voted for a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist, so they should be stuck with him, no matter that his cognitive ability is dissolving noticeably, getting worse each week.

As a registered Independent, I don't think Harris is awful (yet).

I don't see how.

Because they turned a blind eye when their candidate was still in the race and exhibiting obvious and concerning signs of cognitive decline. If they were really concerned about cognitive decline and not just using it to score political points, they'd have intervened much sooner with Biden.

I don't think they said he was as sharp as ever, just that he was sharp enough.

This aired just 5 months ago on MSNBC:

"Start your tape right now because I'm about to tell you the truth, and f you if you can't handle the truth. This version of Biden, intellectually, analytically, is the best Biden ever. Not a close second. And I've known him for years. ... If it weren't the truth, I wouldn't say it."
-Joe Scarborough

It's so cool how you have all the inside info of what really went on.

Biden swore up and down that he was not dropping out of the race. Right up until the post on X announcing his departure from the race, his own staffers were preparing to hit the campaign trail again that week. Anyone who pretends that Biden just suddenly had an epiphany and dropped out of this race of his own volition is simply not dealing in reality.

Yeah, you're right - they voted for a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist, so they should be stuck with him, no matter that his cognitive ability is dissolving noticeably, getting worse each week.

I'm curious what makes you say that. Biden often wandered aimlessly, looking very confused. While Trump is a bloviating buffoon, I've seen nothing that causes me to believe that his narcissistic, self-serving rants are any better or worse than they've ever been.

You're not concerned?

Oh, I'm very concerned. No matter who wins, I'm concerned.

As a registered Independent, I don't think Harris is awful (yet).

It fascinates me how Harris' approval shot up overnight. I've asked before what Harris has done to merit such an astounding increase in popularity in such a short amount of time. No one seems to be able to articulate why she was able to go from one of the LEAST popular VPs in history to Democratic superstar virtually overnight. Harris' best asset for people seems to be that she's not Trump. I don't know why the Democrats don't just admit that they'd vote for a German shepherd over Trump. Heck, there were people here saying they'd vote for Biden even if he were dead.

Pragmatism.

We had two opponents older than Bill Clinton, and neither likely to be able to serve out 4 years. The vast majority wanted someone else.

The Democrats give us someone else.

That DOES NOT make Trump any younger, or more physically and mentally able to serve.

Pragmatism.
If it is pragmatism, you are implying that Democratic higher-ups knew Biden's situation and chose not to expose it to the public a year agao, or at least in January before the primaries started.

Perhaps it was pragmatic to wait and hope that Biden could beat Trump and hope to dump him if the polls moved too far in Trump's favor.
-----------
BOTH PARTIES should have pushed their older-than-BillClinton candidates out before their primaries. That was what many voters wanted.

If Trump's core kept him as the nominee, then it would have been much easier to beat Trump, with more Republican and independent support for a Democratic candidate that appealed more.

No, what I meant was that the rabble’s embrace of Harris is pragmatic - although, her being even less like Donald than Biden was is ginormous plus.

Thank you for the clarification.

I do think that the Democratic Party refused to confront Biden last year regarding his promise to be a one-term president. This isn't as terrible as the Republicans refusing to stand up to Trump.

A battle-scarred Harris would have been an even stronger opponent for Trump.
