When they were dead in trespasses and sins, God made them alive.
Galatians 3:21-22 (WEB) 21 Is the law then against the
promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could
Make Alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, so that the
promise by
faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
John 5:24 (WEB) 24 “Most certainly I tell you, he who
hears [listens] my word and
believes him who sent me
has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has
passed out of death into life.
John 20:30-31 (WEB) 30 Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and
that believing you may
have life in his name.
He did this by His grace and mercy.
Salvation is all by God's grace and mercy, and God has elected to save those who believe through the Gospel message (
John 3:16). God will not grant unbelievers to come to the Son to be saved. God will only save believers.
Romans 3:25 (WEB) 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of his blood –
to be received by faith.
1 Corinthians 1:21 (WEB) 21 For seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn’t know God, it was
God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to
save those who believe.
James 2:23 (WEB) 23 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “
Abraham believed God, and it was
accounted to him as righteousness,” [
Genesis 15:6] and he was called the
friend of God [reconciliation].
So how did the change happen from spiritually dead sinners to saved sinners with new life in Christ?
John 5:24 (WEB) 24 “Most certainly I tell you, he who
hears [listens] my word and
believes him who sent me
has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has
passed out of death into life.
Romans 10:17-18 (WEB)
17 Consequently,
faith comes from hearing the message, and
the message is heard through the word about Christ.
18 But I ask:
Did they not hear?
Of course they did
John 20:30-31 (WEB) 30 Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and
that believing you may
have life in his name.
By God's grace, His undeserved favour. Faith/belief is necessary, but spiritually dead sinners cannot exercise faith.
Unfortunately, you are replacing human reasoning and doctrine with what God's Word actually teaches. That is the issue. If you will look at the Scriptures objectively, putting aside all prior doctrine, then the Scriptures are plain to understand.
But that takes humility, because no one likes to feel they were wrong about what they have falsely believed and defended for so long. However, God sent His Son in the world to save the humble and crushed in spirit.
Luke 18:13-14 (WEB) 13 But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Luke 4:18-19 (WEB)
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because
he has anointed me to
preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to heal
the broken hearted,
to proclaim release
to the captives, recovering of
sight to the blind,
to deliver those who are crushed, 19 and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” [
Isaiah 61:1-2]
Mathew 11:28 (WEB) Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
That also comes about by God's grace. I like the verses you quoted in your post, particularly Romans 5:1-2. Thanks!
You are welcome.
