“NBC and CNN refused to air my victory speech. Think of it — because they are crooked. They’re dishonest, and frankly, they should have their licenses or whatever they have: Take it away.” Those networks should be recognized as political arms of the Democrats.

The networks pulled this same stunt when Reagan was president. Reagan responded by opening a televised press conference with a speech.

Be that as it may, if you look at the laws governing television campaign ads, it does raise an interesting question: In airing the comments of one candidate and censoring those of another during an election year, have the networks crossed that line? At one time networks were so cautious about this that when the animated version of Star Trek aired, an affiliate where George Taki was running for local office refused to air it during the campaign. I think there was also some controversy when Laugh-In, on the night before the 1968 election, aired Nixon saying the show's catch phrase.

A quick search turned this up:

The real question is whether any of this applies.

That’s not what Trump is saying, is it? He wants them off the air for not showing his speech.

Do you agree with that, that they should be taken off the air and have their press credentials removed?

I guess this week it is OK for political campaigns to try and dictate what shows up on media sites.

CNN is not broadcast.
Was about to agree, then thought of satellite links. Would this be murky if a channel is wired/fiber only, but is then made available to a satellite TV company? If so, what about streaming and cell networks? Is the onus on the service provider rather than the channel?

Trump isn't dictator yet. He isn't allowed to control the airwaves. After he becomes dictator, then he can revoke the licenses of whoever he wants.
You've got things reversed. Most major media organizations are political extensions of Democrats that, in collusion with government agencies, try to keep a tight control on the news. The border coverage is a topic that most Americans are familiar with. The most recent was blaming the Texas National Guard for the deaths of three immigrants. The ministry of truth was too overt and they had to withdraw from that formal organization.

This needs to be evidenced. Show me the coordination between the media and Democratic Party to suppress stories that favor the right wing/Republicans.

For Joe the press conferences are extremely scripted. That is not the general practice.

It’s an open question to anyone here if they want to publicly state they agree with this anti first amendment sentiment said by the ex president.

Probably because when he talks, nobody knows what’s going to come out of his mouth and for how long he will blather on… Not even him. So instead of giving him an unlimited forum to just word vomit during prime time, they decided to give us the highlights later.

Besides which, don’t the networks have some sort of equity in airtime rules they have to follow? I remember it coming up waaaay back when Ah-nold was running for CA Governor. His movies weren’t shown because it was viewed as giving airtime to a candidate during regular programming and if they give him X amount of time, they have to give all the candidates X amount of time.

Maybe I’m misremembering or it’s a state thing, but if Trump drones on for an hour saying nothing of consequence (as he does more than he doesn’t), networks don’t want to have to compensate by giving other candidates equal time to prattle on about nothing.

And neither does America, for that matter.

Tight control. Right. You've got some swell conspiracy theories going on there.

Private companies should be compelled to cover “news” that they’d rather not cover?
Whatever happened to “small government“ conservatism?
