  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Audiences and elite tastemakers alike have decided Taylor Swift’s narcissistic lyrics and cliched music are a cultural triumph — but why would we celebrate this?"

^_^

After the last 8 years of unrelenting narcissism, it is Taylor Swift's narcissism which which is leading to societal decline! The deflection is strong...
Taylor Swift has a net worth of $1.1B, so yeah, there is something wrong with our society: Billionaires. No musician or person should have that type of wealth.

Also, some of her music has questionable lyrics. More importantly, there are plenty of good types of music that are not played on the radio as much such as indie music and old-school future house.

Here is some old-school future house sung by Ellie Maddison:

And here is some indie/folk music by Patrick Droney:

I remember the “it’s the music that is doing it!!1!!”, of the 1960s, this happens with every generation (or two); in other words, it’s normal, it’s just our turn to allow some of us to think that the music is to blame.

(hint: It’s not the music)

I agree that the concept of billionaires is a problem when we have a large percentage of earners who‘s income is not enough to live comfortably in our economy. How they make their billions makes no difference.

Taylor does give back though. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/08/13/business/taylor-swift-food-bank-donations/index.html

It is good that Swift gives back, and also encourages the young generation to partake in elections, but there is a parable about giving. If a billionaire with $1B net worth gives $10M, that is 1% of their wealth. However, if a person on the streets with a net worth of $10 gives a dollar to a person with nothing, that is 10% of their wealth.

Luke 21:1-4 New International Version (NIV): As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Music like Taylor Swift, is meant to make money from kids who have very little developed music aesthetic. It appeals to emotions in most cases and not beauty of sound/music.
So I’m not a Swift person… Until like a month ago I couldn’t name more than maybe five of her songs. I’m a hardcore Lady Gaga fan and that’s as far as I go into pop… But even I can admit her bridge in “Cruel Summer” is a bop that sounds awesome. It begs to be screamed loudly.

I like the remixes of some of Gaga's songs, but even then, pop music is hard to get into. At least her style is innovative nowadays compared to 10 years ago. This one is really good. The remix came out in 2020, but sounds similar to the old-school future house from the mid-2010s. And apparently her actual name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. This is the future house remix:

I loved the Chromatica album but Rain on Me wasn’t my fav. Fun Tonight and 911 were my jams, though. Third party remixes are sometimes ok, but I tend to be more into the original vision of the artist, especially in Gaga’s case. She has a laser-focused vision and aesthetic behind what she writes and I like her creativity even if the vision isn’t one that appeals to me.

That's understandable, but I prefer dance remixes of pop songs. For indie music, I typically prefer originals. Just make sure the lyrics are wholesome, and not degrading towards anyone or themselves when it comes to listening to a favorite artist. Also, for me, I typically don't listen to an album, but individual songs from said albums. Gaga is still much better compared to most pop on the radio nowadays. Please stay away from Sam Smith, as his music has dark, ungodly themes. Have never watched a Grammy, and never will, especially with the freaky stuff the show has nowadays.

I heard this song on Echoes and did not know who it was, until John stated who sang the song, it was not a bad song.

This thread seems to be a sign that there is a right wing attack on Taylor Swift for daring to suggest people should register to vote.
No problem with people registering to vote, as long as they have a general idea of how the state and federal governments are supposed to operate. And remember:

There is no such prerequisite for registering to vote.

I am aware of this, but there is the Internet to help with that.
Swift, and many others like her are "limousine liberals" nothing they endorse or oppose, will affect their lives one jot or tiddle. Her money is probably offshore somewhere, and (probably)as the late Harry Reid once said of Romney: "(she) has never paid any income taxes "

Then it's not wrong to get people who don't have knowledge of how the government operates registered to vote?

All citizens of age should have the right to vote, regardless of their education levels or beliefs. People should be encouraging each other to vote. Apathy is a right too, but it doesn't help towards getting an elected that represents the people.

Where would you suggest? The television network "news" would be much worse.
Avoid Opinion shows, watch the journalistc or straight reporting the news parts. Listen perhaps to the first 5 minutes of a particular piece of news, then avoid all the discussion of the news that follows
