You believe in Noah's ark but not the moon landings?
What I was saying is that since imagery of the earth being round can be faked, there are those who will call it fake. I myself am not one of those.

But yes, Estrid, as stupid as it may be to you, I being a Christian believe in what the Bible says.

You see Jesus Christ verified Noah's Ark, and I trust Jesus more than I trust NASA or man-made science.

God gave us science. He gave us knowledge. Not EVERYTHING is contained in scripture

We base our lives on God's word. His teachings.

Remember also that, many things that Jesus said and done are not contained in scripture. Thus, man has the ability to investigate God's creation through His gifts to us.

God made man in His image. With intellect etc. God has given us tools to know things, to make things, to understand things.

Only a very naive person would believe in wild conspiracy theories about a flat earth, NASA rubbishing etc etc....

In the 60's my brother was a chef on a cruise liner and went on a "Round the world" cruise. IF, the world were flat, there is NO WAY he could have done that, as he would have either had to sail from the U.K. which is where the cruise left from to Australia THEN turned around and sailed west to the west coast. - he didn't - he sailed aROUND the world.

That is absolutely correct.

The Crusades, the Inquisition, the Witch Trials.

All done IN SPITE OF the Bible; not with respect to It.

Notice I'll be more than happy to put misuse of the Bible on the firing line.

Can you do the same with your science?

Or do you want me to do it for you?
Of course you would have to be using products of science to do so. But no need. WMD is enough right there.

But even WMD prove the effectiveness of science in telling us how nature works. The Bible does not do that. It tells us how WE should work to be. It tells us about faith and salvation. No need to think it tells us the earth is flat or a few thousand years old.

I agree 100%.

I still believe in science too...
I believe in most science. I also know that science is fallible. That scientists themselves disprove scientific theories and beliefs.

And yet the leaders of my old church did not act so foolishly as to teach against the evidence known to the world. As such they did not teach the literal flood or the flat Earth or a 6000-year-old Earth. Such things could be written off as metaphors, or object lessons, or as written in a way to be understood at the time the texts were recorded, rather than written for complete precision to be understood in a more sophisticated time. When you insist that it is all true (every word, that kind of thing) then you open the door to the erosion of other "true things" described within when some "true things" can be demonstrably shown to be incorrect. If you build you faith on a three-legged stool with Noah's flood as one of the legs, it is not our problem when we chop away that leg.

That scientists themselves disprove scientific theories and beliefs.

Often after the fact.

And many times these after-the-fact tragedies could have been avoided, had they not been catering to [Akita's list] selfishness, greed, and tribalism [/Akita's list].

But there was a time though when your old church would have believed geocentrism and Phlogiston theory, isn't there?

I have no idea about Phlogiston. But, yes, the got a bit enamored with Aristotle and resisted the heliocentric model of the Solar system.

I never said they were perfect, or always wise.

I am only pointing out that literalism about things that can be shown to be false makes for an unnecessarily high fragility of belief.

I had my First Communion and my first encounter with Cosmos the same year, I believe. There were no sermons about the evils of the teachings of Sagan in our church. (Abortion, birth control, divorce, co-habitation, rock-n-roll, communism, yes; Cosmos, no).

I know of people who left literalist Christianity when they found out about the scientific facts on these subjects, but certainly not I as I never believed any "literalist" view of them.

Well I must say that is quite an accomplishment
in the annals of self deception.

You not only found out that NASA faked it,
but you know the one True way to interpret the Bible
know it is the Word of God, and, no small accomplishment,
you also know more physics, geology, hyrdology, biology
etc than every scientist on earth.

And if I presented Jesus as having walked on water as fact, would you think, "Wow, he knows the Bible"?

Or would you think, "He's making this up and presenting it as fact"?
It should be presented as "the Gospel narrative includes and incident of Jesus walking on water."

That's what I like about science.

Science can show things to be false.

But they have to be truly false first.

When science demonstrates Truth to be false, then science can take a hike.

Science can show [on paper] that Jesus couldn't possibly have been born of a virgin, and so end-up with weak-in-the-faith book authors changing "virgin" to "young lady."

But when Jesus comes back and, if He so chooses, take those authors back in time to Joseph and Mary's days to see for themselves, they're going to weep.

Didn't you say the SAME THING about me once!?

I'm jealous!

I thought "I" was the only one who knew more physics, geology, hydrology, biology, and etc than every scientist on earth!

What gives here!?
