anyone who thinks that the gun is causing this fails to recognize that we have a mental health problem in our nation, until we address that problem people will continue to kill other people, hurting people, hurt people. The most effective thing we could do is increase school security.

your post concerns a rare exception not by far the rule. Look at the actions of the officers in this event, two officers immediately entered and neutralized the threat, if they had been on campus when the shooter entered there would have been no loss of innocent lives.

We live in what I think is the most self obsessed, narcissistic time ever.

There's a lot of people who would rather wallow in nothing than try for mediocrity.

This younger generation has, unfortunately, their eyes on the most inflated lifestyles possible since the day they were born, live in relative comfort, and want wealth and fame for nothing.

This isn't some child from a struggling home. She went to a private Christian school. She went to art school. These are expensive endeavors that rarely pay off. She sounds like she was on the autism spectrum but "highly functional" often means that significant impairments are few. She came out as "trans" rather late....and while we can attribute that to her Christian upbringing, we shouldn't, because the number of otherwise gay women coming out as "trans" recently is not small. It could have been a fleeting phase or something struggled with lifelong.

We can never know, because we the public aren't allowed to read manifestos anymore (something I used to do just to gain some insight into these and various other cases). Regardless, she had something to say....and probably felt like shooting the school up would get it said. Perhaps bits and fragments are somewhere online, perhaps not.

It's just a tragedy now, motive a mystery, solutions impossible. I'm sure we'll hear some narrative curated version of what it was about from one side or the other but it's all going to be just that....politically motivated tripe.

What you described *is* mental illness. We have a mental illness crisis in this country, and there are no avenues for those who suffer, outside of 1-800 numbers and appointments that take months.

See, this is more of what I was talking about - you jump immediately into what won't work. I replied to a user who came into the thread just to say "Taking guns won't work" when no one had said anything about taking guns, asking her if she had any constructive ideas on how to solve the problem at hand (i.e. mass shootings) rather than just talking about what won't work. It doesn't have to be gun legislation. It doesn't have to be legislation of any sort. I'm just trying to get people to have a constructive discussion.

I think a lot of that comes from the "well, I've seen how this plays out before and know what the other side is going to try to push for".

Anytime events like this occur, there's always renewed calls for assault weapons bans, mag cap restrictions, etc...

I see a constructive conversation starting with "skipping past the things we know won't work". Otherwise people waste a lot of time covering things that have already been tried to no avail.

For example, if this were a conversation about drunk driving issues. And one side always started the argument with "let's ban alcohol", eventually the other side is going to preemptively start their conversation with "that won't work" just to get it out of the way.

Have you seen the footage from the security cams of the shooter entering the school? (For any who haven't, the only person on screen is the shooter and the only thing shot at is the school building itself.)

The shooter uses the rifle to "open" the front door of the school by shooting out the glass and climbing through the broken door.

How would the armed school officer (ASO) really affect that? The shooter's rifle was more dangerous and deadly and at greater distance than the ASO would have. Pick an scenario and the shooter has a huge advantage. ASOs have been an overall failure over and over. The ones a Parkland failed completely. The ASO at Uvalde Elementary apparently were missing, but then the whole town police force was kept away by knowing the shooter had a semi-automatic rifle.

As for "law-abiding" a large number of these spree shooters *were* generally law abiding until their spree began. Many purchased their rifles perfectly legally. The problem with spree shooters is that they *aren't* stick-up artists, car jackers, gang-bangers, drug dealers, bank robbers, they are normal-seeming individuals with a desire to kill groups of people.

That's actually a fair question to ask (and I would hope police are following up on that)

I'm not sure if this person had already started hormone therapy or not. But I did see an interview with a trans man named Buck Angel on a podcast (I wouldn't recommend doing a general google search for the name since they're in the adult business and some "interesting" search results could come back)

Buck elaborated on how getting the dosages right wasn't an exact science and took about 6-8 months of working with a physician to find "the right dose"...and how that time period had lots of "ups and downs" mental health wise, and how there were extended periods of "out of character" aggression.

I suspect this is much larger concern (with regards to aggression) for female-to-male trans people than it is for male-to-female.

Any power lifter or bodybuilder will likely attest to the fact that certain hormonal interventions have the propensity for amping up a person's aggression (roid rage they call it)

I imagine like with anything else, no two people are going to be the same with how they react to it. And what may be a "well tolerated" dosage for one person may not be for someone else (even if their height/weight are the same)

Hopefully they revise their policy on that.

Whether a person is suicidal or homicidal, that should always be worthy of an "emergency response"/"911 call" and shouldn't be treated the same way as calling to report a neighbor's music being too loud.

There was nothing in the attached text messages that would aid in a police response. Just a call to 911 about someone's friend texting about dying in a fashion that would make the news. There was no place to send a squad car immediately. The best they could do would be to have a detective try to track down the person and check out the situation. It was obviously too late.

My family members were passing around emails yesterday calling for the death of all trans people. One of my relatives used to pray every night for the death of Nancy Pelosi. I could list a hundred other examples, but you get the idea.

I won't initially trust any Christian, because I have good reasons to feel this way.

We sure do. But we are not unique in that regard. Other countries citizens have mental health problems, too, and they are not doing this, leastwise not as much as we are. What is the difference? Values? Mental health care? Or, could it be guns?
