  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why did McCarthy Give Tucker Carlson Exclusive Access to J6 Footage?

No one was or was going to overthrow the government.
And unless they have a death wish, nobody was, or is, going to try. The intent of many was to prevent the due process of the admin at the time confirming the result of the election. To do that, all you had to do was occupy the building.

Is your excuse for these guys now that they were too dumb to get more organised? That a lot of them just got caught up in a protest and gee, didn't really know they were breaking the law in invading the Capitol? 'Hey, Joe, we've come all this way, we might as well take a quick look inside. Looks like all the violence is over now that the police have been overrun'.

Yeah, I'd guess that Joe and his buddy might have been too stupid to realise the consequences. Might have been ignorant of what they were preventing. Maybe they hadn't come prepared with bear spray and gas masks and spear and body armour, masks and zip ties. Maybe the morons who just got caught up in the riot were only sentenced to a week or so.

But none of that makes the events of that day any less of a direct assault on American democracy. I keep saying this, but I'll say It again. It's shameful in the extreme that people are apologists for this. And that some are using a few minutes footage from over 4,000 hours of it, carefully edited by a 'news' organisation that has told you that it will only show you what you want to see, and presented by a man who is a liar and who admits to that fact.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office said on Tuesday that lawyers for defendants facing charges in the January 6, 2021, insurrection will be granted access to US Capitol security footage as the top House Republican has faced scrutiny for allowing Fox News host Tucker Carlson to view the video before widely releasing it.
The House Administration’s subcommittee on oversight “is making accommodations to schedule time for any attorney representing a defendant,” McCarthy spokesman Mark Bednar told CNN.
You mean the defendants were not given access to possible exculpatory evidence?

That is a violation of the Brady rule

The Brady rule, named after Brady v. Maryland, requires prosecutors to disclose material, exculpatory information in the government's possession to the defense. Brady material, or the evidence the prosecutor is required to disclose under this rule, includes any information favorable to the accused which may reduce a defendant's potential sentence, go against the credibility of an unfavorable witness, or otherwise allow a jury to infer against the defendant’s guilt.
Initially, the Brady rule was only applicable if the defendant made a pretrial request for specific information which the prosecution denied. In United States v. Bagley, however, the Supreme Court eliminated this request requirement and stated that the prosecution has a constitutional duty to disclose all material, favorable information in their possession to defendants regardless of whether it is requested. This duty is breached regardless of whether that information is withheld intentionally or unintentionally.

Yeah, I'd guess that BillyBob and his cousin might have been too stupid to realise the consequences. Might have been ignorant of what they were preventing. Maybe they hadn't come prepared with bear spray and gas masks and spear and body armour, masks and zip ties. Maybe the morons who just got caught up in the riot were only sentenced to a week or so.

You started out saying that confirming the result of an election was being prevented simply by occupying the building, and then you start your last paragraph saying, "But none of that makes the events of that day any less of a direct assault on American democracy". Do you really believe American democracy survives or fails based on a particular building? Democracy is a system of government. It's not something housed in a particular building, and it doesn't survive or fail based on that.

Plenty of worse things happen in America, including things that people that don't like Trump or his supporters are in denial of, such as what you point out below.....

And those who rioted last year can be excused for their actions because....reasons!

Yeah, well it's the strawman argument you just constructed, so it doesn't surprise me.

Your last sentence says it's a straw man. And your first two sentences exactly confirm what I said. The begining of your post dismantles the argument made at the end.

That's quite a trick.

So it was a bunch of Southern hicks that attacked the capitol? I happen to know someone named Billy Bob. He’s a lawyer.

What an inept argument. Part of the democratic process is the peaceful transfer of power from one admin to the next. Which includes the ratification of the election result. That process was prevented from happening on Jan 6. Let me repeat that. The democratic process was intentionally prevented from occuring.

Not only that, it has just been pointed out to you that Trump demanded that the DOJ declare the election corrupt. And you have the effrontery to plead dumb when asked what he might have meant by '...and leave the rest to us.' That in itself shows you have no intention of entering into a reasonable discussion.

I'm wondering what would have happened if Ashli Bobbitt wasn't shot. Just what would have that mob done after they breached through the doors?

That mob was violent and could have done some serious damage.

Just a shot in the dark here, but the average IQ of that mob would be something less than the national average. By a reasonable margin.

I wonder what the average IQ of the people who looted and burned and caused 2 billion in property damage would be.

Good grief, you guys are so predictable...

And we all know the mental process that allows this. 'Hey, other people I consider to be the left rioted the previous year. So...umm...that means 'we' can't be blamed for this.'

That is likely the most pathetic argument being suggested that I'm likely to hear this year on this forum.

Three times in the last 24 hours I have predicted separate ways in which views are headed in this thread. And within a couple of dozen posts three of you have confirmed each one. Y'all seem to have run out of ideas. Or should I say excuses.

I’m not making any excuses for the idiots that rioted I just don’t accept your characterization of Southerners. I wonder what kind of blowback I would get if I said something similar about BLM rioters and suggested some ethnic stereotype for a name.

It's a disgrace that some of the police were in on it. Others were fearing for their lives.

Frankly, I've not seen any police who were "in on it". I've seen a lot of overwhelmed and outnumbered cops who didn't confront those walking past barriers that were already breached, but I never saw a single cop lowering any barrier or opening any door to allow rioters past when it hadn't already failed. (At least on purpose, I have seen a few mistakes. One I saw recently for the first time had a cop escorting a few stragglers past an interior door (held open by another cop on the look out for other stragglers to guide out), and then through an exterior door. What mistake did the cops make? They didn't notice that the crowd was thick close to the external door and didn't ensure the door closed properly, so someone grabbed the closing door and a new breach formed. It also looked bad for the cop on the interior door, but he was just looking down the corridor for other stragglers. If I see the video again, I'll post it.)

Fair enough. It was uncalled for and a clumsy stereotype on my part. I should have known better. I apologise. And I will edit my post.

Incidently, I visited Montgomery a few years ago. Beautiful city. Nice people. As were all that we met travelling through the South.

My fiance has said that Birmingham is gorgeous! I have only driven to Oak Hill, Alabama where my fiance's family home is. It is a restored home from the mid-1800s or so.

Oak Hill is the smallest incorporated town in Alabama. I think the population is less than 20

I think that is true. I would have to ask. Their home is right off of 10 and is the highest point in that little town. I have been there a couple of times. Her dad sells timber from the acreage that they own and even had a lake made so that the family could fish. They even hunt the land each year.

The home itself is gorgeous inside and out.

Edit: I just did a quick search and the population is sitting at 14 as of 2020.

It’s in Wilcox County. When I was on the Task Force and did work in Wilcox County the people there had a respect for law enforcement I didn’t find in the other Counties I worked

We don't know any details (AFAIK) since it's a personnel matter, but 6 Capitol Police officers were recommended for discipline.

However, the police said “violations were sustained and disciplinary action was recommended” for six of the cases — including three for “conduct unbecoming,” one for failure to comply with directions, one for “improper remarks” and one for “improper dissemination of information.”
