Here is a ammonite fossil at least 65 million years old I obtained from my uncle who was geophysicist.
The white residue was aragonite converted to a stable calcite in a process called permineralization which requires the presence of water permeating through sedimentary layers and is the most common fossilization process.
These fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.
