Greetings everyone, does anyone know why I have light green leaves falling from the upper righthand corner of my browser as I'm surfing here at CF?

If it's something that's been added as an upgrade, my suggestion is to remove it as it is pretty distracting (motion, of any kind, on a format like this one, always is, IMHO).

Thanks!

God bless you!!

Yes my first thought was 'how very American' I hope Cf realizes that many members here are not American and not even in Fall-which these leaves represent I assume. It's Spring down here in the Southern hemisphere after all.

Well, it looks like some of the other holidays are Chinese New Year and Cinco de mayo.

I agree.

I've lost count of the times I've needed to point out to US posters that America is not the world.

I've just written to the owner with the fairly blunt suggestion that he need s to decide if CF is a US centric site or an international site which just happens to be based in the US.

There is a difference.

I agree this issue is a molehill but it's a molehill which represents the tip of a mountain.

Over the 10 years of my CF membership, I've seen CF gradually narrow its focus from a reasonably open forum to a forum which appears to be dominated by the narrow ideology and theology of ultra-conservative American Christianity with a heavy emphasis on right wing US politics.

This is fine if it's intentional, but If CF wishes to attract a broad international Christian membership it needs to lose its US centricity and open up to a more liberal Christianity accessible to Christians from all over the world.

The Thanksgiving display is the molehill at the tip of the mountain.

Looks like a raid.

Apart from the green confetti all the avatars are wearing what looks like a traditional Welsh hat.

I think you need a smaller one.

I think there are two separate (if somewhat related) issues. One is, for want of a better term, cultural identity and American-centrism. In my view that's just a product of the fact there are lots of Americans here and there's a tendency to assume American norms.

The other is the breadth of Christian identity, and there I agree that a particular "flavour" dominates, perhaps by historical accident but perhaps also by some conscious decision-making. I agree with you that cultivating more breadth is likely to increase membership and participation, and it would suit both my sense of what Christianity should be, and what I value in participating here, but I guess that's really up to the powers-that-be, and what their vision for the place is.

But I wouldn't necessarily assume that narrow ideology or conservative theology are only an American artefact.

I don't think we're in significant disagreement on this although I tend to see a peculiarly American brand of Christianity (an American artefact) in play here.

The 'American' distinction comes from a peculiarly US mix of evangelicalism, fundamentalism/literalism and a heavy involvement in (right wing) politics. Combined with views of American exceptionalism held by some Americans and the American focus on individual rights it produces what I see as a fairly unique form of Christianity.

I'm sure that other non-American Christian cultural groups include some of these characteristics but there appears to be a peculiarly American combination.

We can only hope that CF will do something similar to celebrate the national day of all countries represented in CF membership - not just the US.

I expect to see a shower of kangaroos and emus on Australia Day. :D

OB

I'm not Australian, so it's not my place to demand things, but I second this expectation. This place can only be helped by a marked increase in marsupial content.

FUNFACTS:
Did you know that kangaroos and emus are on the Australian coat of arms partly because neither animal is able to walk backwards?
Did you know that many Americans pronounce 'emu' wrongly?
Did you know that kangaroo and emu (and occasionally crocodile) are available in many Oz supermarkets as steak, mince or sausages?

It is rather funny

Meanwhile Bradskii looks quite dashing.
^_^
Bradskii's dashing hat is actually a hat traditionally worn by Welsh women,

Being Welsh, Bradskii knows this but is desperately trying to keep his cross dressing a secret.
