  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

David Kirtley PhD, founder and CEO of Helion Energy, gives us a tour of his plant, and explains how this technology works.

This project has $2.2 Billion in funding.

This isn't fake free energy click bait.

Fusion is the energy source of the future, and always will be.

I’ll gladly dine on crow if it does work but I’m not convinced it’s anything other than the latest vaporware project promising fusion power just around the corner.

We've been waiting a long while - but on a lot of the key metrics they are gradually improving. They've got a lot more of the moving parts working in new ways - now it's about finding the right configuration to get it from energy negative to energy positive. In the mean time I've just had my own mini-recanting as I used to hold that only a grid with a good few nukes on it could ever be free of coal. But these days I'm getting more excited for the potential for renewables to do like 90% or even the whole grid just because the price keeps coming down.

Then there are other left of field ideas - like what if they get a space industry that can build solar panes in space? Then fly a few thousand Powersats into orbit and boom! 23/7 almost baseload power beamed down to rectenae!

Where’s the fusion at?

7th prototype, 'Polaris'

Helion's seventh-generation prototype, Project Polaris was in development in 2021, with completion expected in 2024.[27] The device was expected to increase the pulse rate from one pulse every 10 minutes to one pulse per second for short periods.[28] This prototype is expected to be able to heat fusion plasma up to temperatures greater than 100 million degrees C.[29] Polaris is planned to be 25% larger than Trenta to ensure that ions do not damage the vessel walls.[27]

On May 10, 2023, Helion Energy announced that Microsoft will become the first customer of Helion Energy, and Helion Energy will provide fusion power to Microsoft starting in 2028.[12]

That is done manually with slave labor; but don't get your hopes up. I doubt that this abundance of energy will be used to advance the freedom and well being of the people of the world. Those in control have a tendency to covet that control.

My reading of the sub-text is that they aim to achieve break-even this year and claim that implicitly represents net energy production. But even if they show a positve energy balance that is a long way from delivering a reliable, 24/7, commercial performance. The investment looks rather like throwing $1 chips randomly onto the roulette table, hoping one of them wins big.

Whatever happens, fusion will be here before the Tesla Roadster or Semi. :)
The Roadster comes with a built in "Mr. Fusion" and doesn't need roads.

It's not like that here in China
