  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does "We all agree X is wrong -> objective morality" actually mean

I don't understand the comment "We all know torturing children is wrong so there must be objective morality"

Could something that thinks it is true explain it in a totally different way

please please please do not just say "but why do you think that"
I would suggest that you only use scripture

An innate morality common to man is evidence of a conscience (Romans 2:14-15).

You have to be Born Again before you can form an objective view on ethics.

Jesus said,
Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot (even) see the kingdom of God.
John 3:3 NKJV

I guess then I'm out. I was never "born again". I was just a Catholic.

If you think the statement "We all know murder is wrong so there must be objective morality" is true
Do you think it is same as the same as the statement
"An innate morality common to man is evidence of a conscience and it is important people are guided by their conscience"
We all have a general sense via The Golden Rule, but specific details require revelation, which requires our surrender to the Holy Spirit [John 14:26].

In your opinion does the existence of the golden rule provide clear evidence that there is a Holy Spirit you must surrender to ?

No. That only becomes clear after you are Born Again; it is one of the perks!

Can you explain what is meant by the comment
"We all know torturing children is wrong SO there must be objective morality"
I am guessing it is something along the lines of
"There is a golden rule SO there must be....."

I don't understand it either.

A vote, even a unanimous vote, does not turn something from an opinion into an objective truth.

We don't vote on whether 2916 is a perfect square.

We know that we would not like to be tortured, so it is probably not good generally.
(A refinement of this is that we might be willing to endure pain if ultimate good will come from it, like in the cases of physical training or surgery.)

Why is this in American Politics if you only want scriptural arguments? You don't seem to want to discuss the politics of this...

God will judge people by the rule of their conscience (Romans 2:12).

How many time can a person be born again?
It refers to spiritual rebirth from the spiritual death of Adam.
Just as at the resurrection, our physical bodies will be "born again" from physical death.

One can be spiritually reborn only once, for then it is eternal,
just as the resurrection (rebirth) of our bodies is eternal.
