As I recall, the main security focus on the morning of 6th January were hoax bomb threats to other parts of the Capitol. Security prioritised these, unsurprisingly.

Nevertheless, it is hard to conceive of a direct affront on - say - the UK Houses of Parliament - that did not trigger a vigorous and robust response from security forces. The delay in reinforcing the inadequately equipped Capitol police needs to be explained.

One glaringly obvious answer is that the executive order for the deployment of reinforcements was not given.

I would argue that if the politicians actually cares about finding the truth and holding people responsible, Nancy and Mitch should be investigated.

I disagree. While the over-all reponsibility rests with Congress, I doubt whether the day-to-day rostering of personnel would - or - should - rest with those in ultimate authority. That must be delegated to senior officers.

Well...the people ultimately responsible would be Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell. But yet for some strange reason, their offices are off limits. I would argue that if the politicians actually cares about finding the truth and holding people responsible, Nancy and Mitch should be investigated.

Well, the claims against Pelosi have already been investigated:

Fact checking Rep. Jim Jordan's claim that Speaker Nancy Pelosi was responsible for Capitol security on January 6 - CNNPolitics

...so I guess that just leaves Senator McConnell to be investigated.

I think my biggest takeaway from tonight's presentation was the fact that this secret meeting came shortly before Trump's Jan 6 invitation "Will be wild."
Vaguely reminiscent of Donald's request to Russia to release his opponents emails coming shortly after his son and other campaign officials secretly met with Russian agents. Something of a pattern of the guy being unable to keep the quiet part quiet.

Overall defense of the Consititution and the procedures prescribed therein, resided with the POTUS. The investigation needs to review the utter failure of our nation's national level security agencies (DHS and others) to identify the threat and martial federal resources to defend the U.S. Capitol. The POTUS lies at the center.

The House select committee investigating the deadly January 6 assault on the US Capitol in 2021 said Donald Trump was at the center of a sprawling conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election that culminated in an “attempted coup”.

January 6 hearing: Trump was at heart of plot that led to ‘attempted coup’

That is the issue. This matters most.

There have been attempts here and elsewhere to minimise the events of that day. It is hard to see how the significance of this could be diminished.

Rep Liz Cheny's opening remarks:

"Mr. Chairman, at 6:01pm on January 6th, after he spent hours watching a violent mob besiege, attack and invade our Capitol, Donald Trump tweeted. But he did not condemn the attack. Instead he justified it:

“’These are the things and events that happen,’ he said, ‘when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long.’

"As you will see in the hearings to come, President Trump believed his supporters at the Capitol, and I quote, ‘were doing what they should be doing.’ This is what he told his staff as they pleaded with him to call off the mob, to instruct his supporters to leave.

“Over a series of hearings in the coming weeks, you will hear testimony, live and on video, from more than a half dozen former White House staff in the Trump administration, all of whom were in the West Wing of the White House on January 6th. You will hear testimony that:

“’The President didn’t really want to put anything out,’ calling off the riot or asking his supporters to leave. You will hear that President Trump was yelling, and ‘really angry at advisors who told him he needed to be doing something more.’

“And, aware of the rioters’ chants to ‘hang Mike Pence,’ the President responded with this sentiment, ‘maybe our supporters have the right idea.’

“Mike Pence ‘deserves’ it.

"You will hear evidence that President Trump refused for hours to do what his staff, his family, and many of his other advisors begged him to do: immediately instruct his supporters to stand down and evacuate the Capitol.

There is documentation that Mitch and Nancy we're aware of the increased risks. Trump even requested more security but was denied by Nancy. For all we know, the whole thing could have been completely prevented had they listened to Trump. Or perhaps everything was falling into Trump's master plan. Knowing Nancy would never agree to any of Trump's requests, Trump requested a form of reverse psychology.

So has the claims made against Trump, but here we are dealing with his "third impeachment trial."
This is not an impeachment trial. According to the Commission, Trump's attempted coup is what is being shown to Americans. Did you watch at all last night?

The Capitol Police Board, consists of the House and Senate Sergeants at Arms, the Architect of the Capitol and the Chief of the Capitol Police. Pelosi was not involved. [Summarised from Fact checking Rep. Jim Jordan's claim that Speaker Nancy Pelosi was responsible for Capitol security on January 6 - CNNPolitics]

So that is settled.

And there has been some accountability for some of the people who were involved. Both sergeants at arms resigned.

Outgoing Capitol Police chief: House, Senate security officials hamstrung efforts to call in National Guard

Two days before Congress was set to formalize President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was growing increasingly worried about the size of the pro-Trump crowds expected to stream into Washington in protest.

To be on the safe side, Sund asked House and Senate security officials for permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby in case he needed quick backup.

But, Sund said Sunday, they turned him down.

Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Kathy Barnette said she was bringing three buses of "[angry] patriots" for the January 6, 2021, "Stop the Steal" rally that preceded the US Capitol riot.

Calling it "our 1776 moment," Barnette promised those attending the rally would make their voices heard, according to previously unreported comments from the time reviewed by CNN's KFile. In another interview before the rally, Barnette said she helped bring three buses to Washington.

In a since-deleted tweet from the day before the Capitol riot, Barnette boasted of her upcoming attendance at the rally. "Democrats are Demons in Drag... They look like fellow Americans," she wrote. "But, those Democrats who believe the voices of MILLIONS of Americans should be forced, shamed & bullied into silence carry an agenda straight from the pit of hell. PERIOD #Resist #WildProtest #Jan6th #DCProtests."

[Her spokesman says she did not enter the Capitol.]

It's a powerful spiritual delusion. That's not going to be driven out by Congressional hearings.

This is not an impeachment trial.
It is a joke circus sideshow for the democrats to distract attention away from their failures and onto Trump. And no, I did not watch and nor do I have any intention of watching that farce because on the list of top 100 things I should be worried about, this is not on it. That hearing is less important than the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial and far less entertaining.

If I have not made my position clear, I would rather baptize a feral cat than watch a single second of that garbage.

A hearing for an attempted coup on the United States is a joke and sideshow. Noted.....
As an American, I disagree.

For remaining supporters of the Big Lie, I would point to Trump's attorney general, legal counsel, campaign data analyst, and daughter saying he lost. Any election fraud known at the time or known now was not enough to change any state results.

I guess I agree Ivanka didn't really have much in the way of qualifications for being involved in government, but this seems harsh.

"Ivanka Trump was not involved in looking at, or studying, Election results. She had long since checked out and was, in my opinion, only trying to be respectful to Bill Barr and his position as Attorney General (he sucked!)," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Yes, your position is clear. You have no interest in reviewing the evidence presented in these hearings nor holding the former POTUS accountable for anything.
