Rep Louie Gohmert on Navarro indictment: "If you're a Republican, you can't even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they're coming after you"

[Interview on Newsmax. He was trying to make the point that Democrats get away with murder, but Republicans can't. However, he referenced Sussman as his evidence, who was indeed indicted and tried. But I'll give him a pass on context, but the quote's too good to not share.]

Interesting... So, besides lying to Congress and Federal law enforcement, what other felonies does the honorable Representative from Texas think the GOP is entitled to commit?

Garrett Ziegler, a Navarro aide and zealous Trump loyalist ... received an email from the senior investigative counsel for the committee, which is scheduled to begin public hearings on June 9, requesting a meeting to discuss information he might have that is relevant to the congressional investigation.

Among his extensive efforts from his office at the White House, Ziegler facilitated a now-infamous late-night meeting on Dec. 18, 2020 in which attorney Sidney Powell, retired Lt. General Michael Flynn and former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne tried to persuade President Trump to order the National Guard to seize voting machines and re-running elections in six battleground states he lost to Joe Biden.

Ziegler used his White House Worker and Visitor Entry System, or WAVES pass to let Powell, Flynn and Byrne into the White House, allowing them to hold an impromptu meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, as he later recounted in an interview with fellow election denier David Clements. Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone were caught by surprise by the meeting, which reportedly descended into a shouting match. Ziegler’s efforts bypassed protocol for White House meetings, and he said when it was discovered that he had let the plotters into the White House, his visitor’s privileges were revoked.

...

Ziegler expressed a similar [Christian nationalist] sentiment in a March 2021 Telegram message, in which he wrote, “We could have a Third Great Awakening in the country, both religious and political. And the coup we just went through could be the flint that ignites it. Hopefully its ends will be a repentance to the Christ and a Republic that gets rid of this corrupt and satanic Oligarchy.”

[He also expressed himself in at least one four letter word, so no link.]

Proud Boys leader Tarrio, four others, charged with seditious conspiracy

The leader of the far-right Proud Boys group and four associates have been charged with seditious conspiracy related to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack that was intended to block Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election, the Justice Department said on Monday.

A federal grand jury in Washington also charged them with conspiring to prevent an officer from discharging any duties.

It's the second group tied to the deadly siege on the U.S. Capitol to face the rare and serious charge of conspiring to overthrow the government or prevent the execution of U.S. law. Eleven members of the Oath Keepers group, including leader Stewart Rhodes, were charged with seditious conspiracy earlier this year.

I think someone pointed out (long ago it seems) that the simpler, less serious cases were being tried first, leading up to the most serious. This seems to be the case.

'Just tourists having a look round the Capitol', remember? It has taken a while to get to seditious conspiracy but we are there at last.

Comparing Donald (I prefer not to use the definite article) to a crime boss is a flame... to the crime bosses who worked hard to establish efficient and effective (not to mention competent) criminal organizations.... something he never did.

Even as president, Donald has, through his words, indicated his desire to be thought of and treated as a crime boss -- I see no need to give him the illusion of success.

Peter Navarro rejects this reality and attempts to substitute his own.

In an 88-page filing, Navarro claims the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack is unlawful and therefore a subpoena it issued to him in February is unenforceable under law.
What needs to be done is to impeach the officials who were responsible for the arrest and chaining of Navarro. We cannot continue to have parties or individuals weaponize the government to go after those who have different political views. In this case Congress has no legal authority to indict anyone, it is an outrageous abuse of power.

Is this really true?

Or is it like those ghost ballot stories - true because Trump and his cronies say so?

Congress does have the legal authority to subpoena people. This is what happens when a person refuses a legal subpoena.

Yes, Congress cannot indict anyone, but they can enforce their subpoenas.

Explainer: Congress no longer runs a jail, so just how powerful are its subpoenas?

Reuters said:
The Supreme Court said in an 1821 case that Congress has the “inherent authority” to arrest and detain recalcitrant witnesses....Alternatively, Congress can ask the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, a federal prosecutor, to bring criminal charges against a witness who refuses to appear. There is a criminal law that specifically prohibits flouting a congressional subpoena.

The arrest of Peter Navarro on an indictment charging him with contempt after refusing to comply with the House panel investing the Jan. 6, 2021 incidents at the U.S. Capitol sets a precedent that is "dangerous to democracy," Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz said on Newsmax on Saturday.

Does Congress have the legal authority to enforce subpoenas? Why do you think that Navarro should be exempt?

Interesting that support is draining slowly and 54% say they view the panel as not too or not at all fair and reasonable.

I think Navarro should be treated exactly as if he were a Democrat. That's not happening.

If he were a Democrat he wouldn't have felt the need to commit any felonies... The dems won the 2020 election, remember?

You want him treated as though he were not a part of the insurrection and had no inside knowledge of it....Too bad reality is as it is.

Democrats are not exempt from Congressional subpoenas and neither is Navarro.

No one says he was. He was arrested and shackled without due process.

Ha! There was plenty of "due process". There was a grand jury indictment, a judge issued arrest warrant.

How was he treated any differently than anyone else with an indictment and an arrest warrant?

He was held for a few hours between his arrest and his pre-trial release by a judge. That's pretty standard fare for non-violent federal criminal cases.
