Jan. 6 rioter convicted after telling jurors he’s an ‘idiot’ who didn’t know Congress met at Capitol
Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who previously dressed as Hitler, was convicted on all five counts he faced, including a felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding.

A New Jersey man with alleged Nazi sympathies who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, tried and failed to convince a jury this week that he didn't know the Capitol building is where Congress meets.

"I know this sounds idiotic, but I'm from New Jersey," Hale-Cusanelli told jurors on Thursday.

It could be true. Everything we know about him points to his ignorance. However, ignorance is no defence.

Bang him up!

A New York man who was part of the crowd that chased a police officer up several flights of stairs as Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building has been sentenced to 41 months in prison.

Greg Rubenacker, 26, was among the small crowd that chased Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman up the stairs outside the Senate Chamber on Jan. 6, as the riotous crowd of Trump supporters angry over the results of the 2020 presidential election overwhelmed police and pushed their way inside the building.

He pleaded guilty in February to all 10 charges against him—three felonies and seven misdemeanors.

A Massachusetts man who has been charged for taking part in the Jan. 6 insurrection has pleaded guilty to threatening a 911 dispatcher while en route to the Capitol. From a truck stop in North Carolina, Jonathan Joshua Munafo, 35, made over 140 calls to a dispatcher in Calhoun County, Michigan, the Department of Justice said. When the dispatcher refused to connect him to a superior since he didn’t have an emergency, Munafo said, “I’m gonna cut your throat. I’m gonna make you eat your [doggone] nose.” Munafo separately faces eight charges related to the riot, including allegedly assaulting a Capitol Police officer.

Previously in even more unlinkable and unlikable stories about Munafo.

The Jan. 6 select committee is seeking criminal prosecution for two of Donald Trump’s top White House aides, saying they illegally defied subpoenas.

The panel announced Thursday that it will commence contempt proceedings Monday against Dan Scavino, Jr. and Peter Navarro.

Peter Navarro rejects this reality and attempts to substitute his own.

In an 88-page filing, Navarro claims the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack is unlawful and therefore a subpoena it issued to him in February is unenforceable under law.

And thus fails the "Not Guilty by Reason of Stupidity" defense.

Wyoming GOP chair (and Oath Keeper) was on restricted grounds during Jan. 6 riot

Wyoming GOP Chairman Frank Eathorne was on restricted Capitol grounds during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot after saying last year he only made a “brief stop in the vicinity of the Capitol,” according to a newly published report.

Photos and video from the day appear to show Eathorne in the restricted area in front of the platform for Joe Biden’s inauguration, which was still two weeks away at the time, NBC News first reported Sunday. It’s unclear when Eathorne ultimately left that day.

CNN Exclusive: [some] Republicans who texted Meadows with urgent pleas on January 6 say Trump could have stopped the violence

"He's got to condem [sic] this [poop]. Asap," Donald Trump Jr. texted at 2:53 p.m.
"POTUS needs to calm this [poop] down," GOP Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina wrote at 3:04 p.m.
"TELL THEM TO GO HOME !!!" former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus messaged at 3:09 p.m.
"POTUS should go on air and defuse this. Extremely important," Tom Price, former Trump health and human services secretary and a former GOP representative from Georgia, texted at 3:13 p.m.
"Fix this now," wrote GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas at 3:15 p.m.

Seventeen months later, CNN spoke to more than a dozen people who had texted Meadows that day, including former White House officials, Republican members of Congress and political veterans. Without exception, each said they stood by their texts and that they believed Trump had the power and responsibility to try to stop the attack immediately.
"I thought the President could stop it and was the only person who could stop it," said Alyssa Farah Griffin, who was Trump's director of strategic communications until she left the White House in December 2020.
Farah Griffin texted Meadows at 3:13 p.m. that day: "Potus has to come out firmly and tell protesters to dissipate. Someone is going to get killed."

Man Arrested [3 Jun 22] Outside Capitol With High-Capacity Magazines, Fake Badge: Police

Jerome Felipe, 53, of Flint, Michigan, was arrested early Friday and charged with unlawful possession of high-capacity magazines and unregistered ammunition, U.S. Capitol Police said. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Felipe, a retired police officer “out of New York,” gave officers a fake badge printed with "Department of the INTERPOL” and said he was a criminal investigator with the agency, police said.

Scoop: Trumpworld plots Jan. 6 counterprogramming blitz

Former President Trump and his allies, in conjunction with top House GOP leadership and conservative groups, have begun pulling documents and coordinating a behind-the-scenes effort to counterprogram the Jan. 6 committee's televised hearings this month, Axios has learned.

The RNC has also circulated a one-page memo outlining its messaging points, according to a copy of the document obtained by Axios and first reported by Vox. The talking points include "RNC Goals" and "Requests from [Trump]":

Between the lines: Republicans have so far sought to avoid drawing more attention to Jan. 6 in hopes the public would largely forget about the shocking scenes from the Capitol.

  • Now they're faced with a difficult balancing act: don't give the hearings free publicity but also establish a coordinated defense strategy to push back against the coming bombshells.

Rep Louie Gohmert on Navarro indictment: "If you're a Republican, you can't even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they're coming after you"

[Interview on Newsmax. He was trying to make the point that Democrats get away with murder, but Republicans can't. However, he referenced Sussman as his evidence, who was indeed indicted and tried. But I'll give him a pass on context, but the quote's too good to not share.]

Trump allies explored sending armed private contractors to seize voting machines in 2020 election

WASHINGTON —

Supporters on the fringes of former President Trump’s circle explored seeking sweeping authority after the 2020 election to enlist armed private contractors to seize and inspect voting machines and election data with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, according to a draft letter asking the president to grant them permission.

The previously undisclosed “authorizing letter” and accompanying emails were sent on Nov. 21, 2020, from a person involved in efforts to find evidence of fraud in the election that year. The documents, which were reviewed by The Times, are believed to be among those in the possession of the House Select Jan. 6 committee, which is scheduled to begin public hearings Thursday.

The letter would have granted authority to three third-party companies to seize all election machines and election data at will, and given the companies and their subcontractors the authority to research, obtain and store offsite “all data and/or code regarding US election fraud, election manipulation, voter fraud, election interference, voter eligibility, and election systems wherever it resides.”

...

But the idea didn’t go away. It is unclear who wrote the final version of the proposed executive order. But in February, Politico published emails dated Dec. 16, 2020, and Dec. 17, 2020, that indicated Flynn and Waldron were workshopping a draft of an executive order to seize voting machines and electronic voting data.

The Dec. 16 version of the order would have tasked the Pentagon with seizing voting machines, rather than private companies. The draft dated the following day gave the U.S. Department of Homeland Security responsibility for taking possession of the machines and data.

“You’re talking about issuing letters of marque effectively to a private sector organization to go do some sort of activity on behalf of that executive office of the President,” Krebs said. “A private sector organization has no authority to go and seize state government equipment. The federal government doesn’t even have that authority, particularly in the context of administering elections. And we are looking at a document that says that’s OK.”

---

Previous whiffs of this have emerged, but now it seems the actual letters are in the hands of the Jan 6 committee (and the LA Times).
