Father Callan’s Commentary on Romans 10:9-18

17. Faith then cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ.

As said above (verse 14), faith cometh by hearing, i.e., by preaching, according to God’s ordinary Providence, and hearing,
i.e., preaching, comes by the word of Christ, i.e., by the commission and mandate of Christ given to the Apostles and their successors (Cornely), or by the word revealed through Christ (Lagr.).

Your response here...

Sorry dear friend but I respectfully disagree. How does what you have posted here address anything in the full post you are quoting from? Sadly, your misrepresenting what I have said to you and making arguments no one is arguing about, while not reading what is already written in the OP. Anyone reading the OP will see what your stating is a misrepresentation of what I have said. Please post the context and link to what I have posted next time and read the OP and let's have a discussion on the OP which is "Scripture is the only rule of faith".

Take Care Carl

Scripture is not the only way we know God's Word today.

Moving on to the next question

Q2.
If faith comes from Gods' Word (the scriptures and Jesus) *Romans 10:17 then how can we have faith or be "in the faith" if we do not believe and follow what Gods' Word says?

any thoughts?

As long as by God's Word you mean that which has been made alive to you personally by the Spirit of God.

This can come through reading the Scripture or from the Spirit by other means.

According to the scripture God's Spirit works through the Words of God as we believe what Gods' Word says. Therefore Gods' Spirit is not separate from Gods Word as it works through the truth of Gods' Word not against it *John 6:63; John 17:17

You either put God's will ahead of your own or you don't. If you don't you have no faith in His abilities over your own.
Agreed Tim good point. We cannot have faith in God's Word if we do not obey what Gods' Word says.

I like the scriptures you have provided. It is through both the spoken Word and the written Word we receive faith as we believe and follow what Gods' Word says

As you use "Jesus" in your question, does it include the body of Christ?

Scripture is not the only way we know God's Word today.
What other way beside scripture do we know the Words of God today? Even a direct revelation from God needs to be tested by scripture to make sure it is not another Spirit.

Eve had more faith in herself than the will of God. Look where that got us.
Would you say tim that genuine faith believes and obeys what God's Word says? This is the opposite of what Eve did. I find it ironic that God chooses to save us in the opposite way that we fell into sin through not believing God's Word and disobeying what God's Word says.

God bless

Is it possible for the body of Christ to become detached from its head?
The body of Christ are all those who believe and follow what God's Word says (see John 10:26-27). If we are believing and following what God's Word says we are in the body of Christ. If we are not then we have either never been in the body of Christ or if we have and departed the faith and returned into sin and unbelief according to the scriptures are no longer in the body of Christ but have cast our lot with the wicked according to the scriptures *Hebrews 6:4-8; Hebrews 10:26-31; 1 John 2:19.

Well He didn't beat around the burning bush. He said 'Repent'.

I'm glad you didn't add to scripture again by inserting the word "Scripture".

I'm glad you didn't add to scripture again by inserting the word "Scripture".
According to the bible, the scripture are the recorded written Words of God given by inspiration of God *2 Timothy 3:15-16 and we are to live by every word of them according to Jesus in Matthew 4:4. All the spoken Words of God we have today comes from Gods' written Word (the scriptures) or at the very least needs to be tested by them to know what Spirit they come from. So when it is written that our faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God in Romans 10:17 it means that our faith comes by believing God's spoken and recorded written Words inspired by God. According to the scriptures if we have no Word we have no faith because it is the Word of God that we are believe and follow.
