  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Modern day systemic racism, does it exist?

The philosopher Chris Rock once asked the white people in his audience how many would like to be him. He noted that none of the white people was willing to be him...even though he was rich.

That's a trick question though because how many of us truly want to be some specific other person along with all of their specific burdens and baggage, rich or otherwise? I can't think of any specific person in this world that I would trade places with and have to completely give up *everything* about me that is me.

The systemic part is that it is a hangover from when it was legal. It doesn't have to be a racist law but it includes include racist practices.
Yes it does! If the system has laws forbidding racism, but people go against the system in order to impose their racism, the system is not racist, the people are.
I was mostly just trying to point out how in many areas we are not integrating. There still seems to still be some segregation happening.
To not integrate does not equal systemic racism.

This is just a commercial with black actors. This commercial in no way tells anybody what it means to be black.

You can't say racism is systemic if its caused by individuals instead of the system. That would mean all racism is systemic.

But how do you define 'the system'? You can define it to include prevalent attitudes, stereotypes, and traditions that are held by a large amount of people, even if they are not technically written down or enforced.

I think you should go back and study what systemic racism is. I mean really read about it.

I said that more in retaliation to the person who made the unsubstantiated claim that with other races, they believe light is good, dark is bad. True there may be some darker people who want to lighten their skin, but there are just as many white people who want to darken their skin. Systemic Racism has nothing to do with it IMO
So now youve told me what you dont mean, tell me what you do mean.
I made no "unsubstantiated" statement.

It was more of an attempt of using your logic against you. If I recall correctly, you made the unsubstantiated statement that for Asians dark = bad, light = good. Now obviously you are not speaking for all 3 billion or so Asians worldwide, you are only speaking for yourself and perhaps the tiny percentage of Asians you know. I was using the same logic when I said for white women dark = good and light = bad. Of course I did this after giving examples of white women getting tans, perming their hair, getting lip cologen shots to make their lips larger, getting nose jobs, etc. etc. We both know I am not speaking for all white women, just a few that I know. So I guess it was more of a tit for tat sorta thing.

But how do you define 'the system'?
A system is an organized collection of parts (or subsystems) integrated to accomplish an overall goal. If there are rules and laws of the system designed to accomplish this over all goal and specific people work against those laws and rules causing malfunction of overall goal, that malfunction is not a systemic problem, it is a specific person problem. Get rid of the sabotaging people and you get rid of the problem.

It is no tiny percent.
Its not unsubstantiated.
Im pretty sure ive s better idea about Asians than you do.
It seems to me it takes deliberate misreading to think the
" light good / dark bad applies to anyone but those
ive mentioned- such as myself- who try to avoid the sun.

I dont know where you get the notion that "logic"
has any part in what I said, or that Im somehow not
aware that there are other notions among other people.

Sometimes I am a bit cryptic esp when texting on a phone.
I didnt elabourate, it didnt mean i am unaware of subtleties.
Asking instead of retaliating might be as good a practice for you
as avoiding being cryptic is for me.

Deal?
