This photo was taken off the coast of Cornwall, England. It’s an optical illusion known as a superior image. When a layer of cold air at the surface is covered by a layer of warm air above, light is refracted downward. A distant observer will perceive the downward slanting light as coming from a higher elevation. It’s more common in the Arctic than at lower latitudes. And it’s an uber-cool phenomenon.

Why do I think the flat earth believers will try to make something out of this?

People perceive the world as flat. And it's a fact.
Your kitchen table has far more curve than the earth does.
And we consider your kitchen table to be flat.
Lets stick to practical terms. The earth is flat. Very flat.
So flat you have never bothered to try and confirm the measurement.

What should be made of this photo. No difference than the sky appearing as water on a road.

The only difference is instead of a road, this is happening over water.

I don’t want this thread to devolve into a flat earth debate. I apologize for the comment in the OP. It was a mistaken and feeble attempt at satire which has been deleted. This thread should be taken simply for what it’s about—a very cool and not commonly seen optical illusion.

One of those rare days when the truth of God's Word is evident. You can make out the correct angles of the thin blue line of the literal (actual) horizon without an optical illusion.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Yet we have a reliable explanation that can be demonstrated in a lab and predicted by models as to what is happening here.
