I listened to talk back - the level of raw hate being expressed presently was disturbing.

At the same time Governments are increasing legislation against 'hate speech'

What Hate is OK and what Hate is not ???

I see the level of discourse between the two ideologies going way beyond acceptable levels.

I shook my head at the discourse in Israel back in the 70's and 80's.
When the grafitti says "Rabbi ______ should be taken out and shot" spray painted in a wall...I thought that was too extreme and was glad I lived where this sort of thing was not acceptable behavior.

Now this exact same type of discourse is here in America and even on this forum. A supposedly Christian forum where I expect better behavior than that...but not finding any. But it's treated as if it's normal.

America has become a banana republic. They have left the principles of scriptures and chaos has become the norm. Now who woulda thunk that? Oh yeah...all the real Christians.

Unfortunately it tends to be if one agrees it isn't hate speech and if one disagrees it is.

Regardless of what is legislated as Christians we should be careful of what we say and how we say it. We should be setting an example.

"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless." James 1:26

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.” 1 Peter 3:10

You can't legislate that people like or respect each other. "Hate" is not a crime.

No speech should be illegal, except direct threats of violence.

Inciting others to commit crimes is unacceptable. Have you ever heard of aiding and abetting?

The lawmakers cannot prove a person's motive is always hate. So even those with good intentions suffer.
So are you now claiming that "Hate Crimes" legislation doesn't exist? That's a laugh.

It used to be referred to as "motive" for punitive guidelines...now it's legislated mandatory sentencing guidelines.

This is a strange argument. If lawmakers (?) cannot prove a person's motive is always hate, that doesn't mean much. If I kill somebody and say I don't hate them that (obviously) doesn't mean much.

Are you seriously implying that those who violently assaulted the US Capitol, killing some and putting others at risk for their lives weren't hate-filled, but had good intentions?

hate speech: speech or expression that denigrates a person or persons on the basis of membership or perceived membership in a social group identified by attributes such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, physical or mental disability, and others. Hate speech involves epithets and slurs, statements that promote malicious stereotypes, and speech intended to incite hatred or violence against a group.

How do you prove motive for something another person takes for hate. People judge by their own hearts. And hateful people always assume that's the motive. Scripture is loud and clear on this.

My first thought is that we don't have a problem with "not being free enough" to express ourselves.

The real problem is the poor quality of what comes out of our mouths.

I lean towards thinking free expression has duty with it. I think duty has been swept aside and people express themselves as they please with no regard for truth, fairness or really thinking about the issue. Nor do people seem to have much concern for how their expression affects others.

A little more research on the matter wouldn't do me any harm - but for now - I'm leaning towards lack of carrying out duty???

It has very definite legal definitions and guidelines. They can judge you on actions and words you have used. They have incarcerated people for just talking about murder on the internet. This is not even a stretch.

But Christians speaking out about sin are motivated by love. Most would call this hate speech.

Yes,
It's getting very scary these days.
There's a definite double standard occurring.

If you speak out against alcoholism and being drunk or chemical dependency you probably won't get incarcerated.
But speak out against the practice of same sex physical intimacy and you likely will become incarcerated for hate speech.

That's what has become of our society.

What?? Can you give an example? Are you really saying that what Christians who speak out about sin are seen as hateful by "most"? Is saying that you shouldn't kill somebody or shouldn't commit robbery is regarded as hateful to some (sane) people?

Excuse me! Speaking out against the practice of same sex physical intimacy will get you jailed? What country do you live in?

I should be asking you these questions. I live in Nashville TN...
It's not even news anymore. It was a few years ago...but it's fallen off front page headlines for a while now.

Have you got the sources? I haven't heard about that happening in America with respect to merely "speaking out against homosexual sex"??

It started over a decade ago with a baker who refused to bake a cake...it's gone way past that now. Pastor's have been incarcerated for preaching from the pulpits and everything.
Where have you been?
