What does the Bible say about trees?

“And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” When we read these words in the second chapter of the Bible, we see a setup for the plot.

Yes, for the struggle of man’s will between obedience and disobedience, between freely moving closer to God and life and life abundantly or farther away and apart from Him, towards man’s own way, towards death. To choose good or evil, life or death, God or no God, heaven or hell. Plus what the others said.

Agreed - God could have chosen to place the tree of knowledge of evil far away from the tree of life - down a steep jagged ravine ...dark and foreboding.

9 Out of the ground the Lord God caused every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

They appear to both be "in the midst of the garden". Still it was a simple and easy test to pass - but God was not making it "impossible" to get to the tree of knowledge of evil

Genesis 2:9, NIV: "The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."

Genesis 2:9, ESV: "And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."

Genesis 2:9, KJV: "And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil."

Genesis 2:9, NASB: "Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."

Genesis 2:9, NLT: "The LORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground--trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."

Genesis 2:9, CSB: "The LORD God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”

It appears that the tree that was meant for food was “pleasant to the sight/good for food” while the other is nondescript. Or could we infer it was unpleasant to the sight and non edible? Both were placed in the middle, so location wasn’t a deterrent or preferred real estate.

It makes me think of 2 things, firstly that Eve must have been bribed to eat it. Like on a dare ‘here eat this ugly distasteful fruit and it will stop you from being dumb, see’

and secondly that God used sight to direct.
pleas·ant
/ˈplez(ə)nt/
adjective: pleasant; comparative adjective: pleasanter; superlative adjective: pleasantest
giving a sense of happy satisfaction or enjoyment.
"a very pleasant evening"
him pleasant and cooperative”

Thirdly Jesus was nondescript perhaps as a ploy to win our love, since the other tree made us so much different .....

The fruit of the tree was the knowledge which was to be gained and the wisdom promised. All sin has pride underlying it and they wished to elevate themselves to a higher level, to God's level, beyond the truth of who they actually were. All sin has this element, of appearing good, of appealing to some natural and good desire even as it seeks to draw us into an unnatural and harmful act.

Where is the scripture of the wisdom promised at the garden? Denied by satan to beguile Eve? God did not promise wisdom besides Himself iirc.
Wisdom built the house, understanding establishes it, but knowledge’s only roll is to fill it.

This thread reminds me of one I started...for some reason:

Tree

Ha ha,

Yeah, there is a lot to learn from trees and all such growing things!

Shalom.

Ya that was more about seeds becoming plants while this may be more about the rings around the bark.

This verse has always perplexed me.

Mark 8:24 He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around."
After He spit in the guy’s eyes! I know!

Oh okay, yeah, I've been very busy as of late. I was kinda hoping that I didn't have to do all the work and others would help it to unfold...and we would have gotten to the bark.

I did mention the bark, and trees within trees:

For instance; a brother and I discussed the possible analogous relationship between a tree's bark (epidermis) and the many creeds and dogmas that developed over the centuries to kind of cover "The Faith", acting as a buffer against diseases and pests.

And

So, we have the Kingdom like a tree...over us...who are likened to trees...trees within the Tree...like Ezekiel's wheels.

What came to mind was the organic nature of time as laid out in the Bible...the Moedim/ Cycles of Yah!

*I will note that bark is shed...

The mystery is how a mustard seed, indeed a mustard plant, could get so big to house so many birds. And the question remains what branches are to be burned. And yet, all will be saved as if thru fire.

Perhaps the answer is in the roots.

Wisdom built the house, understanding establishes it, but knowledge’s only roll is to fill it.
"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it." Gen 3:6

Whether or not she was right in thinking so, wisdom was one of the attractions of the fruit. Ironically, perhaps, as with wisdom gained in touching a hot stove, wisdom could ultimately be gained by their disobedience: the wisdom not to disobey, not to eat of the fruit, the wisdom to believe and heed God's word. They've most likely gained that by now I'd bet. Some lessons are better learned the hard way.

Ezekial’s wheels turning in the 4 directions within a wheel isn’t an analogy I would use to compare rings on trees. jafyi

I doubt it was gained by shadow knowledge, but only thru working within God’s prescribed way, which is to become one with Him, and not a lier.
