If you have 4+ CPU cores and 8+ GB of RAM, you can still make it happen. You might be able to get away with a little less RAM if the distro you intend to run is very lightweight (which many of the more famous ones that are oriented towards noobs aren't).
Honestly, I have no idea what’s inside that laptop, or my desktop for that matter. I know the laptop has an Intel core i3, and the Cooler Master has some AMD processor. I only know that from the stickers. I’ll probably pop my desktop open once I get an ESD strap

If you're on Windows 10, type About in the search box next to the Start menu, and select About Your PC (the subtitle will be System Settings - this is on your computer, not on a website somewhere). The Device Specifications area will tell you your CPU, and how much RAM you have.

i like to play some games so windows it is, also it has a wider choice of programs available i guess.

Using Windows 7 for some years now, last time i didn't install win 10 because it may consume more memory than 7 because is newer with more requirements and i have a somewhat old pc.

I can run two VMs at once with a four-core processor and 16GB RAM without a problem.

Ever since the 3.x kernel came out, I had performance issues with VMs with only one core assigned to them, so I assign two cores per instance. Problem solved.

I'm wondering if the poll is getting a representative sample.

So I spoke with my IT guy and he recommended I use Linux Mint 64bit on my new pc. I will do that and I have since installed it on my backup computer without any issues. I like the cinnamon layout!

I think I’m about to do the same on my desktop, though I’ll keep Windows 10 on my laptop for school purposes. Just bought a good-sized 3.0 flash drive

TenthAveN,
Have you heard about OpenSuse Cinnamon? Its available as an upgrade package once you download opensuse. I feel it is less resource hungry than Linux Mint is...plus you still get that cinnamon feel.

I was going to do it today, then I found out that I do not have the adequate space to back up my hard drive. Another time. I think I’ll just stick with Mint, not looking to do anything too complicated, as there is much room for error. Thank you for the advice though.

Update: My dad has a 1 TB external I can use

TenthAveN,
Use UbuntuCinnamon. I find its much more easy than OpenSuse Cinnamon for beginners. www.ubuntucinnamon.org is their site I believe.

Both Windows and Linux (Debian, the best linux version). I wish I could use Linux only but most pseudo Government forms are Windows and Adobe$$$ Acrobat only.
I've been getting by with LibreOffice for that. They tell me I MUST use MSOffice and so far there hasn't been an instance where they have had a problem with documents prepared and exported from LibreOffice as xlsx or pdf or something. I do have a windows laptop because I do remote access sessions where I have to give others control of my laptop. They were too befuddled by a Linux system so I had to have something that looked familiar to them.

@morse86,
Did you know you can install Acrobat on Linux?

Is there a publicly available form that gives you trouble in Linux that you don't mind linking to? I'm curious, since my experience on Linux with PDFs has been better than with the official Acrobat Reader on Windows. These are books I have paid for in PDF format. I have never had a problem getting them to display in Okular, but in Acrobat Reader, I get the occasional rendering error.
