paliggenesia: regeneration, renewal

Original Word: παλιγγενεσία, ας, ἡ
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: paliggenesia
Phonetic Spelling: (pal-ing-ghen-es-ee'-ah)
Definition: regeneration, renewal
Usage: a new birth, regeneration, renewal. properly, the coming of new birth because "born again"; regeneration.

Thayers- παλιγγενεσία- properly, new birth, reproduction, renewal, recreation . Commonly, however, the word denotes the restoration of a thing to its pristine state, its renovation, as the renewal or restoration of life after death.

In English, the word generate means to bring into existence; cause to be; produce. Re-generate basically means again.

So, it means to bring into existence again, renewed, rebirth, recreate, restoration etc......

When God created Adam, Adam was spiritually alive. When they sinned in the garden they died spiritually.

This is what it means when Paul says we were (past tense) dead in sins. ( Ephesians 2:1,5) We were regenerated and brought back to spiritual life (that man was originally created with, hence rebirth, renewed, born anew-again, born of the spirit etc...). A work of God not by mans will or human decision. John 1:13.

Ephesians 2:4-5- But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions

Colossians 2:13
When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses,

Paul says:
(1 Corinthians 2:14 ) But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The natural man is a spiritually dead person who is unsaved. He does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, and he cannot know them. Why? Because they are spiritually discerned.

Then in the next verse Paul says:
(1 Corinthians 2:15) But he who is spiritual judges all things . . .

The word "judges" there basically means to sift, to examine, to decide rightly.

The question is, how does a natural man who does not accept the things of the Spirit of God become spiritual so that he can sift, examine or decide rightly? The correct answer is that God must sovereignly do it.

hope this helps !!!

regeneration (palingenesis) can be spoken of as an eschatological event because both aspects - judgement and continuity- find scriptural support for the earth also. (matt 19:28 rsv the new world) as can restitution (apokatastasis) of all that God had spoken (acts 3:21 “establishing”) the nt talks about renewal and liberation through judgement and has no personal distinction between mankind and cosmos (gen 3:17, heb 12:26,28,29, acts 14:17)

When does man become spiritual in the parable of the sower?

Matthew 13

3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

Here is a hint. The seed is the gospel not the -> (regeneration = life)

John 5

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

The seed/gospel is the method God uses to give his gift of faith.

Romans 10

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Paul`s sequence of events -> Hear,Believe,Call =shall be saved=regeneration

The ground is the heart of one dead in sin, The seed is the gospel from which comes Gods gift of faith, regeneration occurs when the seed sprouts.

Faith grows into the structure of the plant, The life within the plant is regeneration of Holy Spirit.

regenerated person = God`s fruit of the earth

"Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it "

I don't see where you said much about holiness. Is the new man holy? Unholy? What's your stance on this?

The new man becomes holy without repentence and before he has heard the gospel.
Ok so when we say that God is holy, we dont find it necessary to add, "And by the way, He doesn't have a sinful nature." Thus when we classify Him as "holy" this already MEANS that He doesn't have a sinful nature.

Ok so you said the new man is holy. He does not have a sinful nature in your view?

Of course the new man has a new nature , one that is Holy since the Holy Spirit dwells in him. its the only way he can be holy is by the power of the Holy Spirit.

hope this helps !!!

The natural man does not have salvation as one of his choices. On that we both agree. As a simple matter of logic think about this:If the natural man recieves the Holy Spirit and regenerates at this stage then why would God find it necessary to use His drawing power to bring the person to Jesus?

The word draw in the original language meant to drag, the verse in question is telling us that God forcibly drags everybody to Jesus. If the person already had the Holy Spirit dragging wouldn`t be necessary.

Just as an FYI, I don`t believe getting dragged saves us.
