I can't remember if I ever tried this here in C&WR, but I'll take any questions you have about Christianity and try my best to answer them as best I can.

I'll do my best to answer with the Bible, fundamental doctrine, and even speculate if I have to.

Let's see where this goes.

Which version of the Bible do you use and what heuristics do you use to determine that it is the "correct" version?
I use the 1611 King James Bible, fifth edition.

My heuristic is found in the book of Psalms.

Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

As I understand it, the translation sequence goes as follows:

1. AV330 Gothic Version
2. AV700 Anglo-Saxon Version
3. AV1389 Wycliffe
4. AV1525 Tyndale
5. AV1560 Geneva Bible
6. AV1568 Bishop's Bible
7. AV1611 King James Bible

These are the seven "purifications" mentioned in verse six above.

Why were those necessary?
Since the Bible is "quick" -- meaning "alive" -- meaning It stays up to date:

Hebrews 4:12a For the word of God is quick,

... certain redactions would be necessary as time goes by.

Imagine having only the AV330 Gothic Version to read today!

Luke 1:1 Unte raihtis managai dugunnun meljan insaht bi þos gafullaweisidons in uns waihtins,

Do you have any examples of passages showing significant change in meaning across the purifications?

(I'm not not asking about substituting or rearranging a few words or grammatical changes. )

Have you studied other religions to any significant depth, and what caused you to choose Christianity out of them all?

Are you a member of the same church (or denomination) you were raised in? Are there other denominations you would consider as an alternative to your current one?

"Let the bodies hit the floor"

I think you know what it is about, my question.

Acts of the Apostles 8:9-24,

Simon the magician when he saw that Holy spirit was given to those that the apostles laid there hands on,

he offered them money so he could also do the same,

so my question is what happened then and what happens now when one recieves Holy spirit?

Something extraordinary must have happened, why else would he want to buy the "trick".

Christians have habit of saying,
"You do not understand because you do not have the HS".

What makes them think they have it?

I think Benny Hinn is pretty cool to watch,

No, I don't, Andy, sorry. I can't think of an example off the top of my head.

I studied the New Age Movement for awhile, but ended up going with being an apologist for Creationism, my forte.

Just before I was led to Christ, I considered being either a Hare Krishna, or a Catholic.

I ended up, as my profile says, an Independent Fundamental Baptist.

I had a jillion moral questions in my head, and when I got saved that day, it's like all those questions were suddenly answered.

Everything polarized in my head at once, and it was like a light bulb came on.

I look back and consider that experience, "the joy of my salvation."

As the song goes: "Burdens are lifted at Calvary."

Are you a member of the same church (or denomination) you were raised in?
Well ... yes and no.

I was raised as a General Baptist, but turned my back on God at the age of 16.

At 27, I was invited to an Independent Fundamental Baptist church, and have been there since.

I am now 66 years old.

None whatsoever.

Southern Baptist MAYBE, but I doubt it.

If our church were to fold, I would hunt for another IFB one.

The revelation of the Holy Spirit was in progressive steps.

In the Old Testament, He came upon a few people, like Bezaleel, then left.

In the first century, He came here to stay.

People first got Him by the laying on of hands of the Apostles; but after the Apostles were gone, the Holy Spirit was imparted by baptism ... followed by the laying on of hands ... and now, He comes upon us at the moment of salvation.

This falling backwards, passing out, and dancing a jig is nothing more than fake showmanship.

When I got saved, nothing happened more than a settlement of moral issues in my mind,* which convinced me I was on the right path.

* Issues like shacking up, adultery, fornication, and a HOST of others.

No doubt there is a lot of dubious stuff,

but if Simon was eager to get hold of that "number"
then something extraordinary must have happened.

If those who recieved it just stood there with no reaction.
why did he offer money to buy it.

It would not have drawn crowds to his show.

Why do you believe humans need a saviour at all?

If God created us, why create us so awful that he had to send himself down to die for us in an attempt to save us from his own wrath against us? (being sent to Hell)

And if we did need said saviour why leave us without one for thousands of years?

What happens to all those who honestly and with good intentions follow other religions? Judaism, Hinduism, Paganism, Buddism etc? Assuming those people have encounted Christianity and rejected its claims.

And if all we need do is truly believe in Jesus to be 'saved' what happens if we really really try and just can't/don't truly believe? Do we go to Hell?

They didn't just stand there with no reaction.

Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

No doubt they experienced this:

Acts 8:6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.

Simon wanted the ability to perform the same miracles that Philip was performing through the Holy Ghost.

But Simon was never an Apostle like Philip was.

There is the time when King David danced naked with other prophets under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit - somewhat like Hare Krishnas today. So it's not always fake apparently.

If I'm not mistaken a similar thing happened to King Saul, so it is interesting that his daughter was so aghast when it happened to her husband.
