I've see a few statements on threads about MAGA and people challenging the phrase.

I would like to hear what MAGA means to you. Not what you think MAGA means to others. But what does MAGA mean to you personally.

I don't want this thread to turn into an argument, or a debate, but a view. This way we can see what MAGA really means to each other. It may or may not be enlightening, but I guess we will see. So please post what MAGA means to you personally. Please don't challenge other people's posts. Ready, set, go!

Actually, it doesn't matter what it means to other people, it matters what it means for Trump. He launched the phrase as election platform, it is his job to fulfill that platform. And the voters have to decide if they like that view or not.

MAGA means nothing to me. I believe Trump used MAGA to deceive people.
Indeed. It's an empty catch phrase that anyone can interpret the way he or she likes. Just as an example...
  • Lower taxes and hence cutting in public services or on the contrary better public services and thus higher taxes?
  • A more active role of the USA in the world or on the contrary a more isolationist policy?

The "again" part throws things out of whack a bit because some of this are things we've never really had in spades in the past either, but:

A return to unity and civility as a nation, To reason and rationality in decisions about the direction of the country, To focusing on the well-being of citizens and residents. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A return to a respected leadership position on the world stage. To faithfully work to redress the grievances of those who have unfairly suffered at the hands of the State.

It means going back to the American dream. God, family, employment and that good Ole white picket fence. A time when people said good morning and good day. A time when Americans were united.

All that wasn't so long ago.

I don't think it means anything, because it's not supposed to mean anything. It's deliberately vague, so anybody who goes around championing it can have their own, personal America that they want to bring back. It's just a way to cash in on nostalgia, to make people long for some idyllic version of the past that was likely nowhere near as 'great' as they remember it being.

In my experience, if you can even get people who go around chanting it to nail down a specific time, they'll give you an era that was great for them or their particular class or race - but much less so for everyone else.

And people knew their places and labor unions were very common.

To me, it seems rather clearcut. Following a long period of decline under Obama, Trump committed himself to returning the USA to economic prosperity and self-respect.

What about people who were unable then to live that dream? Why should they want to go back?

The first person to ever use the phrase was Ronald Reagan in his 1980 bid for president...

Now, while I was certainly young in 1980, I see what Reagan did and see him as one of the greatest American presidents in U.S. history.

That said, the phrase reminds me of Reagan and all he did on the world stage. He was, likely first and foremost instrumental in facing down the communists on the world stage, and as such, instrumental in the defeat of the Soviet Union.

I see the same threats again today with Marxism etc. as we once had back then, except now instead of only having to face it down on the world stage, these mindsets have come home to roost right here... so the struggle is to regain economic American strength both on the world stage (defeating potential trade agreements like the TPA, TPP, TPT, the Paris accord and more that would have weakened us economically) but also fight against those Americans who believe we should have a purposefully weakened economic position, favoring other peoples and foreign nations above our own citizens.

So to me, make America great again is about putting American interests first (of all races), and standing against those who would defeat us from within. When the Soviet Union fell, the ideology was exported right here on our own soil, and we see the fight we have before us, for the ideology of our nation. To stand for American freedom, and American interests above all manner of communist (Marxist, Leninist, Stalinist, Socialist) thought.

They were all helped during the Trump recovery. That's something that almost no one could say during the eight years of the Obama 'Great Recession' and that administration's commitment to groveling before every dictator in the world and paying billions to some of them in the vain hope of winning their friendship.

There's two concepts here. What I would do to improve America, and what MAGA [as a Trump tagline] means to me.

The latter seems to be the subject under discussion.

MAGA is every man for himself, profit over quality of life, being enslaved by emotion rather than informed by knowledge, story over truth, American hubris on the world stage, and the marginalization of various minorities for the comfort of the majority.
