It's a hot summer here, but this week it's in the low-mid 80s with low humidity.

Yep, mid 90s here west. so my daughters house (with ac) was really nice. Today it's about 10 degrees lower, so did my grocery shopping earlier. At least, next Monday's supposed to be only 71, but then it climbs til it's 89 on the 11th of August. This is not normal! I'm actually thinking of investing, next spring/summer in one of those new little portable Acs!

I am aware of the heat in the Pacific Northwest recently. I know that temperatures have been in the 100's in places like Medford, Pendelton and Wenatchee, with the heat extending into British Columbia. It's been long while since I have been in that area, Coos Bay more specifically. I was not as interested in botany at the time but I remember the enormous leaf size of the big leaf maple;; nothing like our sugar maples and red maples here in Upstate New York.

It remains consistently very warm here but rain is more abundant. We had our 13'th day in the 90's this year yesterday.

How long were you in Coos Bay? I don't know of anything that compares with upstate NY as far as deciduous trees. At least in the US (I've only been out of the US into BC/Alberta and to northern Mexico). It's beautiful in upstate NY (no matter the season)!

That's so tiresome to have the heat up there for so long. I lived in southern CA for a few years and I got so tired of the heat (and even got tired of so long a stretch without rain. Definitely a WA girl).

Upstate New York has beautiful autumns, but New England is even nicer with its quaint antique villages amidst autumn landscapes.

Our area is at tmes rather moist and when it does become hot it can be rather humid, unlike southern California in the summer. Rainfall can be rather abundant in the summer generally occurring in combination with thunderstorms which are relatively short lived but can bring intense rainfall. For the most part summer weather is sunny. Overcast skies predominate in the late fall and early winter with lake effect or lake enhanced precipitatiin.

I lived in upstate NY (well, the Catskill area) for a summer. I thought it was wonderful then. Even tomatoes, which I normally think only so-so) were wonderful there. In some ways like WA's Olympic Peninsula, but in other ways, not at all. Those beautiful deciduous trees! And they made the hills rounded, rather than pointy, like Wa trees. Those thunder/lightening storms where there was usually jagged lightening like pictures show! I was entranced. I spent most of my couple years on the other coast in Conn., but saw further into New England in the fall. NYC only every once in a while for just a few days during the couple years on the East Coast. I was late teens/early twenties then, so maybe I wouldn't have been so awed now.

Still hot (mid-80s) here now. I'm not wild about heat anymore and there is little weather variety in July-August. At least the forecast is for upper 70s starting Thursday with only a day or two for the rest of August hitting 80. We'll see how accurate they are, a well-known forecaster in the NW for 40 years then, said during a snow-storm here, that weather forecasters never really know from one moment to the next here what the weather is going to be. So I have a 50% chance it'll be right.

Tropical storm Isaias passed by just to the east of us. Rainfall here was continuous, moderate to heavy, for over 12 hours. Winds were relatively calm. Temperatures were steady around 69 F during the storm. Areas 45-50 miles or more east to southeast of us were expected to have flash flooding. Strong winds were expected in eastern New York State and New England. I should have more specific information later.

Unfortunately I was not able to obtain exact information about local rainfall amounts from Isaias. Griffiss our local weather station is about 14 miles west of here and recorded about 1.35 inches of rain. We almost certainly had more than that here. There was no flooding locally. However we were previously running a deficit in rainfall.

Temperatures are also beginning to cool here, although elevated temperatures are expected this coming week.

On my FB feed today, I saw a picture of England currently that has totally red vines around a house. It didn't say where in England it was but I can only think it must be in the quite northern part. Here it's upper 70s. Looking at the estimations of the rest of the month and somewhat into Sept., temps are still in the 70s (although low 70s). We're certainly not what I would consider, the southern part of the country. Also, a lot of our weather the last few weeks has come out of the north/northwest.

Our area just had a significant storm (derecho) blow through from the west (the strongest wind gust at 112 mph), by the time it got to us, there was a sudden outage of power but just as I reached for my flashlight and switched it on all the power returned.
The rest of it was a mild rain with mild wind, thunder & lightening.

My wife picked up some yellow/orange colored leaves yesterday that fell from a sugar maple tree in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Only a small number of leaves on that tree had changed and overall foliage was green, untouched yet by fall.

That's just crazy! What is the survival time of a person caught out in air that cold; seconds?

Well; if we go from the low of -107.7 F in the Antarctic; to the high forecast for here; in the PNW Cascades foot hills; for Saturday of 102 F (39C) that's a difference of 209.7 degrees F.

I'm kind of concerned about this weekend; from Saturday noon to Sunday 9 pm the NWS has forecast for an excessive heat warning for Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon.

The problem is; we haven't had the kind of weather to get acclimatized with; which would be a gradual buildup of hot days for a month or so.

Just last we we had a cloudy day with rain; and a high of 69F; and yesterday it was 78F; tomorrow is to be 89F; Saturday 102F; and Sunday 100F.

With my wife and I not getting any younger; handling temps over 90 F; can be problematical. Our AC can usually knock off 20 degrees or so off the outside temp; so for 93F like we had a couple weeks ago; we were able to get it down to 73F; which is about as hot as we like it. So if we get 102 Saturday; like was forecast; it could be around 82F inside. Not good.

And here in the Cascades; we are in a small valley surrounded by hills of about 1500-2000 feet; and the temp can be 2-5 degrees higher because the wind is not as strong.

Does anyone have any tips on staying cool; or foods to eat that cools you off?

Vostok is a Russian research station in Antarctica. It has no permanent residents but there is always a small group of people staying there. In the summer their number swells to about 25. The coldest temperature ever recorded at Vostok was -128.6 F (-89.2C) on July 23, 1983.
