I understand the name of DEATH Valley...

Do you think it would be possible having five of those degrees (C) exported for Norway? If so, please wrap and pack for Metrological Instutute, department West, NO-5000 BERGEN, Norway.
I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving up 5 C and shipping it to Norway if it were possible. Actually that location, Greenand Ranch, Death Valley holds the record for the world's hottest temperature-134F ( 57C) set July 10, 1913. It was previously he'd by a location in Libya - 136F (58C) but was invalidated. The accuracy of the Death Valley location has also been questioned.

Actually the hottest world temperature was recorded in 2005 by NASA through remote satellite- 159.3 F (70.7C) in Iran's Lut Desert. The desert is uninhabited and parts of it are essentially devoid of plant life. There are no ground weather stations due to its remoteness and inaccessibility.

Yes, rebornfree, this summer has so far been below average.

Highest summer temperature recorded at single day is for Norway total 35.0 degrees C/95.0 degrees F. (Aug 6, 1975) For the coastal area (less than 200 kms/125 miles from shore) highest summer temperature recorded is 32.6 degrees C/90.7 degrees F. (Aug 11, 1975 and July 1, 1945) Highest average summer temperature measured for a month (July) is 18.3 degrees C/65 degrees F (1901), typical is 13-15 degrees C/55-59 degrees F. Highest number for measured tropical days (highest recorded temperature 30.0 degree C/86 degrees F or more) in July is 10 (1889)/6 (1975). Anyone understanding why figs, grapes and orange trees isn’t very fond of Norwegian summers?

And just for mentioning it: Deepest recorded snow in populated area is for July 1.90 meters or 6 1/4 feet. July 1, 1962. and about 200 kms E of Bergen. (And at April 1 deepest snow was 4.20 meters/14 feet, not surprisingly same area.)
Thank you for the information HisCrossMyPeace. I love knowing about different countries weather patterns. Your highest temps are probably similar to ours, but your typical ones, for this time of year, are a bit lower. At the moment we are experiencing overcast weather with some dry spells and temps 15-17 C.

The high temperature yesterday, July 19, at Griffiss in Upstate New York was 93F (34C). According to my reckoning this should be 12'th day this year with a temperature in the 90's during this very hot summer. The rain/ moisture situation has improved.

PNW is sunny and thankfully very slightly cooler than earlier this week, but the forecast says it's suppose to be in the high 80s-90s next week. Aaaaaa! I just have a couple fans and no AC. There's a heat warning/advisory (mid to upper 90s) for this next Monday. I'll just go to my daughter's a few hours earlier than normal. She has AC. In this area we just don't normally see temps above 70-75.

Julian, do you live near the Pacific Coast? I presume that the heat is from an interior air mass, off shore winds, perhaps air being heated (adiabatic heating) as it descends from the Cascades.

Sort of, on Puget Sound just south of Seattle, a couple hours drive to the actual coast. I haven't paid enough attention to say if this heat wave is from on shore or off shore winds. But generally our weather comes from the Pacific, so this being from the Cascades wouldn't surprise me.

Your weather is almost enirely influenced by the Pacific Ocean, mild and rainy in the winter and cool in the summer. However similar to coastal areas in Southern California where Santa Ana winds occasionally bring hot, dry weather from the interior and sometimes fires your area rarely can experience something similar but not as often and not as hot. Your location is quite distant from inerior air masses and maritime influences are very dominant.

You sound like a closet meteorologist. Or maybe not so closet?

I haven't heard of any Chinook winds (our version of Santa Anas) right at the moment. I'll have to pay more attention. Actually, there've been pretty few even breezes the last few weeks, but that doesn't mean they won't start up this weekend.

Nice summer day expected in Norway where live: 13.5/56 degrees C/F recorded (by us) as early as 8 AM and the weather forecast suggests 17/63 degrees C/F before noon. Peak - 19-20/70-72 C/F - is suggested 3-4 PM. Wind S-SE and 9-10 knots + light cloads should make this an excellent day for Norwegian summer.

However, some places in Norway is’t cold: The little village Atna near the border Norway-Sweden reported -4/25 degrees C/F at 5 AM this morining and seventh night i July with recording at 5 AM below 0/32 C/F this year. Opposite, Kirkenes, 2nd northermost town i Norway, reported 24/75 drees C/F peak yesterday and expect >20/68 degrees C/F 8 AM-8 PM all weekend. Two boys at age three playing in the sea at a beach informed the journalist that the sea (16/61 degrees C/F) was “hot and a little cold, but hotter than colder”.

I looked into it this morning and the winds for the highs forecast for this coming Monday come from the north/nnw! Weird!

Yep, mid 90s here west. so my daughters house (with ac) was really nice. Today it's about 10 degrees lower, so did my grocery shopping earlier. At least, next Monday's supposed to be only 71, but then it climbs til it's 89 on the 11th of August.:sigh: This is not normal! I'm actually thinking of investing, next spring/summer in one of those new little portable Acs!

It's been a fairly cool summer in this part of the UK, with a number of showers and other drier days with heavy cloud. I expect it has been hot when the sun was out, but I never seem to catch it (and am not bothered as I get sore in the sun). The drier evenings are quite pleasant, but a little cold, for chatting to neighbours while watering the plants.
