  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question for climate change deniers.

Seems like a waste of time to me. Find a way to reuse that waste material to build houses or something.

That's what the trees are for. The best use at present of surplus waste paper is fuel for space heating.

Space heating huh? :) Just buy yourself a space heater at Walmart, cheaper that way. Sorry I can't take this seriously, let's save the Earth by scattering trash over it!

Some years ago I heated my house, water, and the apartment above with newspaper logs, burned in a 'space heater'. I no longer use that space heater but still am able to heat the entire building, a two-flat, with wood in my fireplace. I buy a $20 firewood cutting permit from the state each year and harvest dead and fallen trees in the state forest where I hunt.

Speaking of taking things seriously, my brother and sister never took their health seriously, though I pleaded with them to do so. They are both gone and I'm still climbing trees (I'll be 80 next spring). :D

Would you actively oppose efforts to reverse or mitigate climate change (global warming)?

That is a good question......
I do write against a Carbon Tax because i do not believe that it will do anything about the threat of rising ocean levels whereas the alternative theory by New Mexico biologist and coach Carl Cantrell is win -win - win -win for all of us.

"So how is our problem of continental drying causing global warming? It all has to do with vegetation and sunlight. When sun light hits a plant, it causes a process which we call photosynthesis where the energy from the sun light creates oxygen for us to breathe, water for us to drink, and is stored as sugar for plants and animals to use. When the same sun light hits the soil, all of its energy turns into heat and is radiated back into the atmosphere.. ."

"Therefore, the less vegetation you have on the planet, the more sunlight is being turned into heat and the warmer the planet becomes...."

"Just take a look at any satellite picture of the earth showing heat and you will see that our deserts are the warmest spots on the planet by far. More heat is being generated by just one of the top four or five deserts than by all of our cities combined.... "

"The truth is that you can do more to decrease global warming by just reducing the average temperature for the Sahara Desert by one or two degrees than if we humans completely quit using fossil fuels and returned to the cave…."

"So, how would you start working to resolve this problem? Easy, cool the deserts and get some vegetation growing on them as soon as possible. But the method is much more complex than that. You have to use the prevailing trade winds in relation to the deserts to get the best results as quickly as possible and it will be extremely expensive…."

"Then we build desalination plants along the coast near these water sheds and pipe water to the tops or ridges of the water sheds…"

"We need to start working on this as soon as possible because, if the planet reaches a point to where it is warming faster than our technology can possibly stop or reverse this warming trend, then our planet is lost and all life will cease to exist on this planet within a relatively short period of time. We will need to start with the largest and hottest deserts because cooling them will have the greatest benefit in the least time (Global Warming II by biologist Carl Cantrell)."

Staying active is extremely important but I think genetics play a part too. My dad was still cutting firewood into his 80s, but then his balance started to go. I have always heated with wood, and it sure does warm you with exercise first. We probably live more sustainable than most people who call themselves environmentalists.

Good genetics won't overcome bad habits.

I try to get all my wood cut in the early spring before it gets hot and before the bugs come out. I do have to split some in the winter but I have an electric/hydraulic splitter so it's pretty easy.

Good health habits would have a positive impact on the environment probably more than any other change considering the energy and other resources needed to maintain the poor health that so many millions seem to enjoy.

A group of 500 scientists and other experts have penned a letter to the UN declaring that there is no climate crisis and that there needs to be an open discussion on the issue of climate change. “We urge you to follow a climate policy based on sound science, realistic economics and genuine concern for those harmed by costly but unnecessary attempts at mitigation,” they write.
Five hundred scientists send letter to UN saying “There is no climate crisis” - The Post Millennial

I'll repeat what I did when this was posted elsewhere. Out of the 500 "scientists" who signed the letter 10 are climate scientists. The fellow who organized it got his bread buttered by the oil industry, having built his career working for Shell. The letter is filled with cherry-picked, quote-mined data.

The governments around the world cannot mitigate climate change. All countries in the world are sovereign nations and their governments deal with fiscal policy and their economies.

For every country that decreases their emission of CO2, there will be ten countries, where CO2 emissions are rising. You need to stop about 100 third world countries from developing?

You definitely need to stop China and India
from developing their economies, as their emissions will grow exponentially.

Anyone who thinks that governments around the world will mitigate climate change is deluded.

Evidence, documentation, substantiation? And have you checked said data about the 400?

Evidence, documentation, substantiation? And have you checked said data about the 400?

SUMMARY
This letter presenting a short list of claims about climate change boasts a list of “500 scientists and professionals” who have co-signed it.

The claims contradict or misrepresent the evidence uncovered by geoscientists, failing to provide support for its conclusions downplaying the threat of climate change. The letter claims, for example, that climate models ignore the benefits of increased CO2 on plant growth. This is false, as many climate models simulate the response of vegetation to increased CO2—and the climate change it causes.

And while some outlets described the co-signers as experts in climate science, most are not. As noted in an analysis below, a significant portion of the co-signers are either engineers or professionals in non-technical fields. Only 10 identified themselves as climate scientists.

Similar letters have sought to establish credibility with large numbers of co-signers in the past, but evidence is what counts in science.

Letter signed by "500 scientists" relies on inaccurate claims about climate science

What I'd like to know is how climate change became a religious issue. Shouldn't the existence or non-existence of global warming be a purely scientific issue? Shouldn't the causes (if any) be a purely scientific issue? Shouldn't the appropriate response(s) be a purely scientific, economic and policy discussion?

Yet virtually every day on Christian radio there is some report about how a city or state just experienced record low temperatures or snowfall, accompanied by gleeful hee-hawing by the radio hosts as though this demonstrates what a fraud the entire global warming scam is. That's right, global warming is a scam because Podunk, Vermont just hit a record of -12 on April 6th.

I take it that it's supposed to be an article of faith among conservative evangelical Christians that global warming is nonsense. Not just "not a major concern" but "ungodly nonsense, to be ridiculed at every opportunity." Why? Simply because global warming figures prominently in the progressive agenda? How does that transform what should be a purely scientific question into a religious one?

Just last weekend, end-times guru Jan Markell and her guest Michelle Bachmann were discussing this issue on Markell's program "Understanding the Times." According to Bachmann, we "know" global warming is nonsense because God promised he would never again destroy the world by flooding. What?

I suspect that what is really going on is what I have decried for years. Too often, "Christianity" serves mostly as a code word for the right-wing political agenda on issues that have no real religious aspect. Just say global warming is un-Christian and you'll rally the troops. And I say this as someone who shares the conservative position on many (but certainly not all) issues.

Let us say for the sake of argument that this global warming is true. [Note, I don't believe it] and the U.S. and some other countries make an all out effort to remedy it. What effect will our efforts have when a large part of the world will not do anything, e.g. China, South America, Africa, Asia?

I would hazard several guesses: For one, you referred to these people or programs as "conservative" and for good reason. That would in itself make the Global Warming claims newsworthy to this audience, especially since the rest of the media play it up quite a bit on their own.

Second, there is little doubt that these same Global Warming campaigners enjoy vilifying Evangelical Christians just as you appear to be doing in your post here. That being the case, to have "Christian radio" concern itself with the subject in reply doesn't seem--to me, at least--to be at all surprising or out of place.

And finally, many of the Global Warming activists do insert religious claims into their appeals and their rationale. Contrary to the idea that this is purely a matter of science, it is those people who have approached it as though it were a religious/spiritual/moral issue as well as a scientific one.

The science of climate change is solid and based purely on temperature measurement.

True, and a lot of scientists are going to be embarrassed over it as no one is going to do anything meaningful about it. Nobody cares.
