Interesting.
The article says:
"In modern Mormon-speak, young women still are taught that “virtue” remains nearly synonymous with chastity."
This is typical op-ed styled speculation. It is either true or false on a case-by-case basis.
If chastity is defined in Christian ethics as a matter of "sexual conduct," (which, it is) then how can being a victim of rape be considered a loss of chastity? The act of rape itself is not initiated by the victim, regardless of the variable factor of allure, whether by ignorance or positive intent on the part of the victim. The "sexual conduct" is borne.by the assailant. The art of attraction, however sinful or rebellious in its specific instance or general nature,
is not synonymous with violence and/or fornication!
This should be obvious to any person who can reason for themselves. Who can imagine a young lady, while preparing to go out of doors, musing to herself: "Wow, I sure hope I get raped out there!"
The solution to this problem is in teaching young people to think critically. And that ship has, to a great extent, sailed.
However, there do exist some fine remedial tools for those who are ingrained (or "enslaved" might be an even better term) in identity politics, group-think, quasi-liberal, leftist culture, alt-right (name your poison). One such tool is a book called "The Lost Art Of Thinking" by Dr. Neil Nedley. Dr. Nedley is the president of Weimar Institute and University in Weimar, California, and an internal medicine specialist of 30+ years who, at one point, came to the realization that far too many physical ailments are largely the product of bona fide mental illness and that MDs are not taught, nor inclined to accept this. He has made it his life's mission to fulfill the Gospel Commission in this capacity. He runs comprehensive depression recovery and health programs through on-site treatments and prolific extension courses and seminars. He recommends other Christian mental health-specific authors, including William Backus and Lynn Clark.
I'm no defender of LDS history or doctrine. But the Bible speaks quite clearly about the lengths to which God goes to reach our hearts and minds in order to touch us and reason with us (apart from even scripture itself). I was raised a Southern Baptist, with all the sect-specific trappings that go with it. Even now, I struggle with -isms that are common to the faith of my choosing at adulthood. As long as we blame or depend upon institutions for our ignorance, the problems that arise from it, and the solutions to them, we will have a crutch hindering our progress to becoming the vessel into which God has longed to fashion us.
He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. (Jeremiah 18:6)
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Apart from the shamelees promotion of favorite (admittedly commercial) authors and teachers, Dr. Nedley's instruction material is
widely available on YouTube. For those interested, a good place to start is here:
