While it is clear that the US is experiencing a disturbing slip into some dark places, I am very confident this is a "blip". Studies show that young people tend to retain their political views through life (despite the notion that people become more conservative as they age). And the data shows that younger Americans are, in general, more "liberal" than the older, whiter, Trump demographic. At the risk of seeming macabre, as the older white demographic fades into the night (and I am part of that demographic) I would bet the forces of progressivism will prevail in the long term.

I agree, i think it's short term, but it still affects a lot of people. I'm sure the next generation will shake their heads and make it right...

Here is an example of how those of us on the "left" may be guilty of wonky thinking. I suggest that a cool, objective appraisal of the data shows that capitalism (not necessarily unbridled capitalism, mind you) tends to promote peace. I bet some lefties will bristle at this suggestion.

But we must look at the data, not our set of beliefs.

Well reality and facts always trumps (scuse me) bias or politics...

Progressivism is good for idealistic young people.

When those people become surly and full of vinegar because of the social, psychological and economic pressures of conformity, they will repress that idealism and fall in line with their demographic psycho-social totem.

It doesn't mean any of it is right or wrong, it just shows how fickle all of this is in general. What is "right" in a society is based, in large part, on status quo and social axioms within a tribe. If your tribe is united, you have strength even if you are "wrong" according to the rest of the world. If your tribe is split based on, say, skin color and country of origin - you get utter weakness. Even someone/something that is correct can be overcome if they are weak.

I fear you're right. I just hope society tends toward acceptance and inclusion in the future, the way it's going now is toward bigotry and xenophobia...

This is by design. We are already global, the xenophobia and bigotry is the response to "us" realizing it before we consciously realize it. Once this dies down, we will be back to the same spiels as before - poverty, super rich minorities, global corporate entities and if we are "lucky" enough to make it to the space age, we may have corporate ownership of satellites, moons and planets. There will be no cash, but everything will be socially weighed (status and class/caste).

The world will eventually become united, but it will be the unity that is shared between clay mixed with iron as opposed to carbon and iron. I am not sure we can make it (acceptance and inclusion) last, because this has happened before in history.

I see what you mean, and of course it will be a blend of all kinds of ideas.

Sadly I'm not very optimistic...

Are you speculating? Do you have supporting evidence?

Evidence is what matters and here is some from highly credentialled academic Steven Pinker (extract from Enlightenment Now):

A critical discovery displayed in the graph is that the liberalization (***in context, this is a liberalization of young people) does not reflect a growing bulge of liberal young people who will backslide into conservatism as they get older......Young people take their emancipative values with them as they age....

This claim is then supported by "Values go with the Cohort not the Life-Cycle" - Ghitza and Gelman 2014; Inglehart 1997; Welzel 2013

Please see my previous post. Again, evidence not "gut-feelings" or even common-sense is what matters. The only actual hard evidence I have read about suggest that people more or less retain their values over time. And the fact is that the younger, more ethnically diverse demographic is more liberal than older people.

So I think there is reason to be hopeful.

GO Trump! Maybe start singing the National Anthem with my hand over my heart.

"We have no king but Caesar..."

Like I said: mobs haven't changed much.

Watching from the outside, I think the treatment of children at the border will be something the US will have to defend to coming generations...
Outside the border? You aren't there, your I'm Sweden watching it on CNN. Yep, your outside.
Sweden will have to suffer their error in allowing the massive amounts of Muslim refugees they are paying for in many ways _ for generations - aye?

He is a very good conman of course. I just fail to understand that his con can last so long, most of the world saw it for what it is right at the beginning...

Maybe no one, or very few are actually still buying any of his con jobs. A person would have to be pretty naive to still believe half of the things he says, after having seen him in action the past cpl of years. But still, compared to Hillary, compared to any Dems currently running, it's a no brainer to a lot of folks--Trump is still the better choice by a long shot.

I would take any Democrat candidate over Trump. I would vote for a potato over Trump.

Evidence is subjective - based on a combination of psychological, psycho-social, and anthropological axioms. This includes academic evidence. You have a choice to reject it, or accept it - but neither choice actually vindicates something as true.

What was the sample size of your evidence? How deeply were the statistics extrapolated to draw the conclusion? Interviewing 1500 people out of 150,000,000 young people is one-hundred-thousandths of a percent of the population. In that case, the conclusion would be deeply based on subjectivity.

We can look at experience - usually much better than local/temporal statistics, but that still doesn't say anything about the truth.

What kind of evidence will satisfy you?

I'm seeing all these assertions about Omar (why not say you just don't like her name!) and the others in the Squad being anti-American and anit-Semitic but with no evidence. The fact that so many extreme assertions are made without any sense of needing to be backed up with evidence is in itself worrying. Posters seems to be victims of their prejudice and indoctrination.

Another question: Democrats are often referred to as "Dems" yet Republicans are not referred to as "Reps". Why is that?

It’s called lying.
