People are saying America was never great. They are not saying that America was and still is great. I'm not in this thread trying to stump for the Make America Great Again meme . I am asking people who say America was never great to explain the apparent contradiction between that stance and the free choices people have and still make to risk everything just to get to America?

The point is that even though America can be, and is by many measures "great," MAGA refers to a mythical golden age with the "Again" when things were not nearly as good as they are now.

I guess it depends what people are looking for.

If they are looking for strong capitalistic ideals, america is the place for you. If one is looking for a nation that ranks high in quality of life and the measurements used to determine the same; poverty, crime rates, education, healthcare, etc, then america has a lot of work to do and always has.

Trump made up the stupid slogan, so blame him. Most Trump critics I hear point out the slogan is stupid because America IS great.

But MAG isn’t as catchy from a marketing standpoint.

But I have heard many people say America was never great. That is something very different than what you are saying. Again, I am not interested in defending MAGA I am only interested in why anyone would contend America was never great.

I wasn't referring to Holder alone. I have heard and seen the phrase "America was never great" in numerous place from numerous sources. Funnily enough not from people leaving America because it was never great. If you don't agree with the phrase and don't know why people use it there's no need to reply.

Perhaps the thread is about Politicians who are reflecting on America's past greatness or lack thereof.

Can't as say I've ever heard anyone whining about losing preferred status. I do hear people complaining about others getting preferred status though.

A good many of my fellow Christians of the conservative slant are chronic whiners and complainers because of being less able to use the government to help with evangelical endeavors. And getting resistance to government sanctioned prayer and not getting to put up Christian monumoin courthouses. That kinda stuff. Roy Moore-type stuff.

I don't think tte USA is, or ever was great. There are lots of terrible countries, the USA is simply better than them. If your birth country is a cesspool of poverty, violence & death - the USA would be a veritable oasis simply by being better than terrible.
