  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No Compromise at the Border.

Yes, to $12000. You know how much I was able to deduct because of the the deduction plus child credit and alimony last year? A little under $16,000. So I'm $4,000 in the hole already because of the Trump tax cut. Thanks.

$4000 x your tax bracket.

Guard towers in sight of each other AND patrolled by guards with dogs? You've just doubled your 27,000 guards to 56,000 guards. One in each tower and one patrolling between them with a dog. Remember, that it's YOUR numbers I'm using.

And that's presuming that the "guard towers spaced within sight of each other" are only 200 yards apart. If they're closer, say to account for terrain, then the number of personnel needed, goes up.

I don't have space to fine tune my fence here. Suffice to say it will be effective, saving taxpayers $billions each year.

The problem is that your "metaphor" doesn't resemble anything like the real world or ANY Democrat's plan for immigration. If it did, you would have given an example by now. Yet instead of backing up your position with quotes or policy proposals you continue to deflect.

De facto open borders.

No fence= open borders.

But do you condemn him for it?

As I said; shut down is shut down. The "champion" of getting rid of illegal aliens has made it impossible to get rid of illegal aliens until he gets his way. Hypocrisy at its finest.

It's an investment that will yield fewer illegals in the long run.

Then I guess you don't care about those of that will still be alive but won't be getting out SS what we paid into it thanks to the government taking it all.

If you live long enough you will make out very well regardless of reduced benefits.

Oh really? Feel free to enlighten me, oh omniscient one.

Lot's of info on the www. I suggest the SS official website.

Where did you walk 200 yards of fence by yourself?

Korea, 1963. And the route was much longer than 200 yards, which meant that it could have been breached. One hundred yards each way is about the right spacing for one guard. He can walk 50 yards each way and visually secure the rest, or lay off at distance and visually cover the whole 200 yards. If in a tower on flat terrain he can secure even more fence without walking it. So the terrain, and vegetation would determine the configuration of the security measures.

Your hunting dog is not equivalent to a military or police working dog.

My dog was a lab. Guard dogs would probably be German shepherds; even better suited to the task.

Billions of dollars on the line and you want “just trust me” to be the extent of our due diligence?

I’d also like to point out that in order to cover a full week of 9,000 posts, you’d need 4 shifts (not 3 like you said) unless you are planning to have each guard work 56 hours a week, every week, with no time off ever. So all of your estimates are 33% more than what you said.

$4000 x your tax bracket.
I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Can you elaborate?

I'm in the same tax bracket as I was before. The rate went down 3%. At my income that's just under $1300. So I'm still paying $2700 more than last year.

I should just trust you on that?

Nothing you've posted so far does supports your claims. Get back to me when you have real support for your claims.

Everything on the SS website agrees with my understanding. If you feel I'm in error, please elaborate. Otherwise...

If it could have been breached then you were walking an ineffective patrol zone.

Based on what? And please don't say your experience.

He can walk 50 yards each way and visually secure the rest, or lay off at distance and visually cover the whole 200 yards. If in a tower on flat terrain he can secure even more fence without walking it. So the terrain, and vegetation would determine the configuration of the security measures.
Thanks for the laugh. I wish you would actually be consistent with your claims.

My dog was a lab. Guard dogs would probably be German shepherds; even better suited to the task.
I repeat, your hunting dog (and its training) is not equivalent to a military or police working dog.

We aren't simply talking about guard dogs, remember? Your claim was about "attack dogs".

To be fair, that is what Trump wants so his supporters are perfectly fine with it.

Good point, I didn't even think about that.

I think the numbers are a bit off, but maybe I missed something. The US-Mexican border is over 1,900 miles, closer to (or even over) 19,500 miles depending on how the fence runs. So, if you have a guard posts every 200 yards, that is around 17,000 guard posts, so 17,000 single guards per tower. If you have two guards per tower (with one in the tower, the other walking the fence, perhaps switching off every hour), you are up to 34,000 (or even 35,000) -- and that is if they work 24 hours per day and live in the tower. If you have three shift, you triple (or likely quintuple, to ensure they get days off each week as well as annual vacations). And that doesn't include the support staff needed to do administrative work, as well as hire, and train people for that guard duty. When you start adding it up, you are likely looking at around $10 billion just in personnel costs annually to man and support this fence.

Easy to say, hard to support with facts/data/etc.

Got any?

Let's build the wall and see. If I'm wrong I'll apologize all over the place.

Success frequently comes to those who do things that others insist can't be done.

I'm glad you aren't in charge of planning the fence.

Let's not and spend that opportunity cost on things that actually matter, like - oh...I dunno - the paychecks of federal employees.
