I posted asking how to start a new thread, and thought this was just for technical questions, but maybe it is for all threads. So...
I wonder a lot about these two questions. Many scriptures seem to make it plain that people go to hell forever, but others imply everyone will be saved.
And do you think Jesus went to hell for us, for 3 days?
How do you explain Him preaching to the Souls in Hell then?
Hell is never called prison and prison is never called hell in the Bible. If Jesus preached to the lost in hell how is it that the only people saved were Noah and his family who were not dead in the grave or hell but alive on the earth.

1 Peter 3:18-20
(18) For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
(19) By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
(20) Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
Luk 4:18-19 records Jesus' earthly ministry
Luke 4:18-19
(18) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
(19) To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
The word translated "captives" in this passage literally means "prisoner of war." "spirits in prison."

that is not what it says at all. it says saviour of ALL MEN, specially of those that believe.
tis showing the difference between the overcomers and the rest of mankind and Christ IS the saviour of BOTH parties.
Does that include the people in these verses?
Psalms 115:17
(17) The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence;
Psalms 6:5
(5) (6:6) For in death there is no remembrance of Thee; in the nether-world who will give Thee thanks?
Psalms 30:9
(9) (30:10) 'What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy truth?
Psalms 88:10-12
(10) (88:11) Wilt Thou work wonders for the dead? Or shall the shades arise and give Thee thanks? Selah
(11) (88:12) Shall Thy mercy be declared in the grave? or Thy faithfulness in destruction?
(12) (88:13) Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark? and Thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
Isaiah 38:18
(18) For the nether-world cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth.
Proverbs 24:20
(20) For there will be no future to the evil man, the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
Ecclesiastes 9:5
(5) For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Isaiah 26:14
(14) They are now dead, they live no more; their spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them.

Der Alter, I do not understand that verse at all. What do the spirits in prison have to do with Noah, and who were they? The context is Jesus' sacrifice for mankind. It seems to me the spirits in prison were either souls in hell or other beings. And I have no idea what that has to do with Noah. Do you read it like Jesus was talking about Noah and his family, being in the prison of an absolutely corrupt community, and world? I need to do some research on this one.

Der Alter, the problem with all those verses is, they were all written before Jesus, when people did not believe in an after life, as I understand it anyway. But then why did David say if my soul goes down to hell, you are with me?, if he did not believe in an after life? Was it metaphorical?
Not to debate with myself :) but I guess I am. Just trying to understand. Is it not true that the Jews do not and did not believe in an after life, then or now? I need to do more research!

Generally Bible versions describe "hell" even if they never use the word "hell", such as in those Bibles listed here: Hell is Leaving the Bible Forever

However by referring to "hell forever" i had in mind English Bible versions that speak of punishment being "forever" or "everlasting" or "eternal", e.g. Matthew 25:46. Here is a list of English translations that don't use those words in that verse:

Have you been decieved by your Bible translation?

If there is no "hell forever" in Scripture, then it isn't difficult to see how a temporary hell harmonizes with Bible verses that refer to all being saved, such as these: Unique Proof For Christian, Biblical Universalism
Interesting. Thank- you. I will look further into that.
It's interesting how difficult language translation can be... to capture the exact meaning

..., who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. (1 Timothy 4:10, 1984 NASB)

Both phrases are assertions of who Jesus is, but nothing is said in this verse about what the effect of that is. It's like we are learning one of Jesus' titles.

one can hardly be called the saviour of all men unless one IS the saviour of all men.

What verse does it say that Jesus went to hell to preach?

"18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."

Depending on your view of hell and how you gain understanding of the words, I can understand how one would feel that Jesus did not and could not go to "hell" to preach.

He mentioned Noah, because the scriptures mentioned noah after the verse about preaching to souls in prison.

@Robin Mauro, when you consider the arguments before you, note the difference between an argument that arises based on your own reading of verses from God's Word vs. arguments based on another human's interpretation of God's Word. The more steps removed from what God said, the more prone to error the reasoning is. In fact, my experience is that only the thoughts of the person trying to interpret Scripture are potentially solid. Someone referring to another human's thoughts have a pretty good chance of having some sort of error in it. We tend to condense what others have said into something we can easily accept and understand, and important details are lost (ala the "telephone game"). If I am talking to someone who can only quote what others have said, that means that the person himself is only partially able, or completely unable to back up his claims with convincing evidence. (Side note: Similarly, note the difference between someone explaining his ideas vs. someone explaining his experiences. Much of the Bible reports what people experienced, not what their theories were. This is particularly helpful for those examining other religions/cults/heresies.)

An ironic passage, since it implies that Paul believed in eternal condemnation:

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! (Galatians 1:8-9, 1984 NIV)

Be sure you are seeking the God that IS and not the God you wish He was. He loves you and will take care of the rest.

Jesus paid the price for our sins and we have eternal salvation through Him. Believe this in your heart and you shall be saved out of all your troubles. He is the Son of the living God. God looks upon the heart. Jesus overcame death, hell, and the grave. O death where is thy sting? 1 Cor 15:55 Jesus descended before he ascended on high and preached to the captives. Cry out to Him even in Sheol that thou soul shall be delivered and restored from the Pit. Jonah 2 5:7, Psalms 30 2:3 In Jesus Name. Amen

God can do whatever God wants... however he has said once you are cast in, no one is going to pull you out. Hell is your second grave, it is your second death. you will be consumed by fire.

Did Jesus go to Hell? the bible simply says Jesus went into the grave which is 'sheol' which some translates to hell, but in the hebrew it means grave.

Greg j., I was trying to respond to your statement that showed up in my email, but it takes me to this one instead, so it seems my difficulty with this website is not just me.
In the one in my email you said the scripture about "savior of all men, especially those who believe", was about him dying for all but that not all would be saved. But if you take the scripture as stated, it clearly says savior of all men, especially those who believe. So you are taking other scripture and substituting it for this one.
You may be right, but that does not explain this one, and I am one to take scripture as stated, thus my original questions.
Also you quoted that the demons believe in God too, and then said something like that puts unbelievers on the same level as demons, but that is your own addition, not scripture as stated. That one is simply saying that believing God exists is not enough, even the demons believe that. It does not say peoole are the same as demons.
And as for tne scripture above about not taking gospel other than what we preach, my questions on this issue come directly from reading scripture as stated, not from wishing for some other gospel or God.
I desire to understand scripture, as it is stated.

@Robin Mauro, I suggest you stop listening to people's ideas and start spending more time in prayer about what you want the Holy Spirit to reveal to you (along with studying Scripture). Talk to your pastor regularly as a self-check. That's why God gave us elders. Be obedient to God, because it is only to those people that the Holy Spirit reveals truth. Everyone else cannot understand correctly.

Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. (Matthew 23:10, 1984 NIV)

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (John 16:13, 1984 NIV)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32, 1984 NIV)

Yes, the scripture 1 Timothy 4:10. He is savior of all men, especially to those who believe, scripture is another example of scripture which makes me think we don't completely understand about hell. That one may be the best example.
I will check out that thread, if and when I can find it, and when I have time. Thank-you so much
I don't find any contridiction here. Jesus said that He died for the sins of the world and hence any man who chooses Christ, in faith to them He is their Savior.

Jesus wishes that all would come to Him and take advantage of His gift.

However, not all mankind chooses Christ

The quick answer is that there are a certain election of people - relatively finite - that are the people of the Most High God from the foundations of everything. They always will be.

Only those people will be saved, even if they happen to go to hell (Gnostic). The people of the Most High God - the finite election - will be saved even if they let themselves stay in iniquity and, therefore, hell perpetually. Eventually, they are going to "come to" and be saved. This is the one application of the parable of the Shepherd going after the one sheep, leaving the other 99. The other 99 are in heaven safe; that one is wandering - a biblical euphemism for hell. (Gnostic).
