For sediments such as sand, silt, clay and lime to turn to stone, they must be buried to depths where there is intense pressure and heat. The sediments then become sandstone, shale and limestone. As continents drifted apart and collided together the deep lying rock strata were bent and thrust up upon dry land along low angle thrust faults. I used to map these faults when I was enrolled in a state university. A rock may bend when pressure is applied to it for thousands of years. There are giant fossils thousands of feet below the surface of the earth buried there millions of years ago.
