I find this topic very exciting because who would not love to see God come on the scene like He did in the past ages?Well, then. With that I am in full agreement.
The problem becomes recognizing the truth, and a prophet who tells it, when we come across them. We are to judge their message upon the scriptures, alone. But we do not all agree on what the scriptures say. Christians have some common beliefs, and separate themselves from others over what they do not agree, leaving scores of denominations.
When people first react to something new, they judge it by what they already believe; their different points of view supported by assembling various verses into themes that some accept and others reject.
How then, can we all agree on the words of (what might be) a prophet?
Would we not then require them to assemble verses together to form a theme, just as we do with one another? Have him prove that these things he says are based in the scriptures? Or would we even give them a fair hearing?
The very reason Prophets are needed is because we didn't get something right the first time. They often tell us what will come to pass because of our failure to abide by God's precepts. The very nature of accepting a Prophet and his message is to admit you were wrong about something.
A Prophet today would sure have his work cut out for him.
Sadly, most people. The majority even missed recognizing Jesus Christ Himself whe He was here, subsequently crucifying Him. Even about John the Baptist Jesus said;
Matthew 17:10-13
10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
A few chapters later Jesus was rebuking those who withstood Him and said these words;
Matthew 23:34
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
This is generally the patern you'll find in both Old and New Testaments. And it's mostly the people they are sent to that gives them the most trouble.
In today's world I'll say aandas you pointed out that the Christan world (denominations) would be the ones that needs it the most.
And why is it they refuse it?
Man made, doctrines, traditions, pre conceived ideas, lusts of the flesh, greed for wealth etc.
So what does God do? He takes His few and leave the rest sitting in the chaos of darkness.
I believe that this has pretty much always been the patern.
Luke 18:7-9
7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
