In fact, they both died that day and so had someplace to go. Paradise.

That is because it would support the Catholic doctrine. God can make an exception, but that is not the rule. The rule is that we have to wait for the resurrection.

You're correct that the Catholic Church believes this.
Upon death, immediate judgement.

But my Nazarene church also believes this.
The only church I know that believes in soul sleep are the SDA. Oh, and JWs.

I believe it because it makes sense.
Energy does not die, it could only change.
God could do as He pleases, but He did create physical laws,,,so if we soul sleep, where does our energy go?

At the white throne judgement we will get our bodies back,,,some glorified, some not. This is what will happen.
When we die, we will still feel alive.

This directly contradicts Scripture. (not for this forum though) Search online if you like. See Bullinger's "The Rich Man and Lazarus" PDF free online which goes from Genesis thru Revelation, all the Scripture (unless he misses one),
about what Yahweh says happens to anyone when they die, every occurence in the Bible. It is enlightening and one of the only true freedoms from false tradition

There doesn't appear to be any need for them in learning the truth about anything.

I agree. Jesus knew he was speaking "today".
He meant to tell the thief he was going to paradise that very day.

GOOD QUESTIONS. If you seek the Truth from Yahweh, in line with All His Word, and confirmed as Yahweh grants understanding of Scripture as it is written He did and does to believers,
THEN you will know. If He doesn't reveal the truth, then you won't know.

What about ongoing or progressive revelation?

Yahweh says why in His Word. Jesus Praised Yahweh for hiding salvation from the scholars (including those who were not immersed in Him, and those who rejected Him, and those who He calls sons of the devil) .
Yahweh does teach every one the same if they are His children - no matter where in the world they are , whenever Yahweh reveals Scripture/ grants understanding (see in Scripture)to anyone, it is in perfect harmony with all His Plan and Word and not contradicting anything He teaches / reveals.
