Again, this is NOT a debate, this is a poll, I want to know which Catholic doctrine Protestants and other non-catholics have difficulty with the most. I've already decided what my next topic for a debate with Protestants will be, but I'm not going to be doing it for a very long time. Maybe if things go extraordinary well this summer, I'll start up the debate this August, but that's only if things go extraordinarily well with my other plans, I'd personally prefer to wait and plan on it as much as possible. That debate will be last free-style debate I'm having on here, after that I'm sticking to formal debates only, but I'm getting off topic here.

Anyways, please select which Catholic doctrine you have the biggest issues with in the poll, you can expand on it in the comment section, but NO inflammatory comments! Be as respectful as possible, this is not a debate!

The one I had the most trouble with, though, was praying to the Saints. That kind of was a big one.

The first Saint I prayed to was Saint Aphrahat. Nervously, but he responded within the hour. That was pretty amazing. Mary was next.

It's like opening a box just a crack, something shiny's in there, and you open it some more and there's all this treasure.

Edited: for more reverence.

Kind of half expected to get struck by lightening. Apologized to Jesus *as* I was petitioning Saint Aphrahat just to cover all my bases. Got my answer the same hour. I was like "dang, that worked! Thank you!" Pretty incredible. Mary was next.

Nice, Mary and the Saints does seem to be the last hurdle most Protestants have when they come into the Church.

Probably either the doctrine of justification or Sola Scriptura the most, but there are others depending on which period of time from the history of Catholocism we're talking about, or which flavor of Catholic.

Mine isn't in the list - infallibility.
Well, it would be kind of hard to debate both the Papacy, Sacred Tradition, and the Catholic understanding of Sacred Scripture all at the same time. Although, I assume you, yourself aren't interested in this kind of debate.

I voted "Rejection of Sola Fide".
I did have a little trouble deciding as I have problems with all but the first 4.

But rejection of justification by faith alone is huge for me.

Not terribly interested in the debate, no.

But - to explain what I mean - I can accept a level of (shared) primacy for the Bishop of Rome, accept Tradition, and probably share a fairly Catholic view of Scripture; but I can't accept any of those things to the extent of agreeing that any group of humans can understand, and propagate that understanding, infallibly. So to me, it's at the point of infallibility where the wheels fall off on all of those things.

The Papacy for sure, the other doctrinal "issues" I'm largely indifferent to, or support. The Pope is an issue mainly because of the massive slog of Church History that I have to read through (and my tendency to get distracted by all the other amazing things the Church Fathers had to say), and it's interpretation, meaning, etc. The seemingly stretched early interpretations of references to Church of Rome, like by St. Irenaeus or people who wrote to Rome (it being assumed that it's because of this that it proves primacy or authority, which may not have been intended), so-called "pre-suppositional Catholicism" (or Orthodoxy) and the many, many other traveled interpretations of the Keys, the Church, and other subjects related to it.

To me that's the only "issue" worth considering, because if it's conclusive that the Pope is truly the prime successor then there is nothing a true believer can do but submit to his instruction (since we know as a historic fact that Christ rose, from reason that a theistic God exist, and that this is the only faith in the world to consider), or hate God (in your great pride). But if he's not... then I'm not entirely sure what I should (or would) do, maybe be Lutheran or more likely Reformed (though I disagree on Saint and Mary veneration, and agree with the Catholics on many things in the Catechism so far).

The rejection of Sola Scriptura leads to all the other errors mentioned in the poll so I vote for this one. If we accept Sola Scriptura then it cuts every other error off at its root. This is why Sola Scriptura is often called "the formal principle of the reformation".

Infallibility is my biggest objection, too. My reasoning is pretty close to Paidiske's.

A second objection is the Catholic church's view of itself: The belief that the Catholic church is uniquely the church that Jesus founded, in a way that the Orthodox and Protestant churches are not.

I don't really object to most of the things on the list in the poll.

Question: Which Catholic Doctrine do you have the biggest issue with?

Answer: I wouldn't say it is any one doctrine alone that I have a problem with. However, the whole bowing down to statues and praying to dead people is rather freaky and dark. I also do not like the pagan symbols everywhere. Pagan fish hats (from the Babylon religion), pagan sun worship symbols (from old sun worship religions), upside crosses (like in devil worship), etc. Then there is the "Hey, look at us! We are holy because we got these holy looking outfits on!" Yes, I understand that OT priests used to put on certain holy garments, but we are not in the OT. The priesthood and temple etc. were pictures and symbols pointing us to Jesus Christ.

I remember going to Catholic church a few times when I was young because of other people that I knew. My memory of that time was that the ceremony wanted to put me to sleep. Everything was done in such a way that I thought they were trying to put some kind of hypnotic trance on me. In Brazil, my wife (who was a former Catholic) told me there is a Charismatic Renewal group of Catholics who look and sound like Protestant churches. Their worship music is more like Protestant worship services, etc. They were losing the young generation, so they created this new group.

Also, IMO - the papacy looks religiously fake looking, as well. Jesus warned against those who seek attention and who go about in long flowing robes. Jesus says the greatest among you serves. They do not look to be seen or be uplifted by others or seek the spot light. We are told to do many things in secret before God the Father (whereby we will then be rewarded openly).

Then there is the violation of many verses within the RCC, as well. I know my Bible so there are lots of problems I see.
  • Call no man your father (Matthew 23:9).
  • A warning against those who say to abstain from marriage and eating of meats (1 Timothy 4:1-3).
  • Jesus's warning against repetitious prayer (Matthew 6:7), etc., etc.
Then there is the billions of dollars and assets owned by the Catholic church. Did not Jesus say to put your treasure in Heaven instead of on the Earth? Then there is the eerie connection between Mystery Babylon mentioned in Revelation 17 through Revelation 18 and the RCC. Coincidence? If you believe in such things. Then there is the fact that the Romans used to worship and pray to multiple gods in the old world. I see this as similar to praying to many saints (gods). Whether you agree that this is connected to the formation of Catholicism in 325AD or not, it is rather coincidental. I mean, there are so many red flags in the RCC, it would make think I was in a Russian airport.

Sola Scriptura is high on my list of things I want to debate.

I would gladly debate this issue. I'm writing a paper on this subject for my seminary course and I'm teaching a Sunday school class on Sola Scriptura!
