Well, it would also have been silly, since the US put an astronaut into orbit in 1961.

But of course this is just another American-centric view - it's almost as if only NASA exists. The Russians beat the US into space with Sputnik in 1957, put an astronaut into orbit in 1961 and achieved the first spacewalk in 1965. Pretty hard to do on a flat earth, and supposed compartmentalisation of NASA had nothing to do with it.

Yes, there may indeed be many off-limit government installations there, but that doesn't mean the entire continent is off limits. Even places within the USA are off-limits. Does that mean something is being hidden that would expose some grand conspiracy if it were uncovered? Places and things can be off-limits to most people for a variety of reasons.

Perhaps you've heard that SpaceX is planning to take space tourists into space. Then there will be non-astronauts, non-NASA, non-government people going into space. What will you say about them when they come back to earth and tell about seeing the earth as a globe. You say you haven't made up your mind yet, so you'd be willing to listen to the first-hand account of people who actually see for themselves, correct? And no, I don't mean before you dismiss them all as liars.

I was really hoping that you would work us through a calculation.

I am no mathematician. I have know way to say if your math is right or not..But, if I figure this right, and you are calculating the hump in the middle.. it would be smaller than the total drop.
