Not quite the way I would have expressed it, but I am not sure the OP's information means much. Even during the time I did my time in the Army, less than 1 in 50 were in the military, and that was the period of highest military service outside of WW II. There was forced conscription still on when I joined.

And most of the jobs in the military, all branches, do not really requires some major physical stamina. Boot camp is about as tough as it ever will get for the majority of those in the military. Not belittling anyone by saying that, it is just fact and always has been. Most jobs in the military are support jobs, technical jobs, etc and not directly combat related. I know it sounds shocking to some, but even during the peak of the Vietnam war, only 1 in 10 military people that were assigned to that theater of operations actually served in the bush and were shot at.

Guess the military will just have to work harder to recruit and offer more incentives to join.

Failing that perhaps a lack of warm bodies will at least compell a reduction in our foreign interventions.

When denigrating the youth it’s useful to keep at least somewhat abreast of what they are actually doing. I’m in my mid 30s and the game boy is tech from my childhood.

Kids these days are much too "woke" to go die for some ill-defined cause of protecting freedom especially when the biggest threat to our freedom is coming from our own government.

Nope, that's not how it works.

Now I'm sure for the individual their choices have got a lot to do with their lifestyle, but the quality of life for the country is based on things like healthcare, education. I'm sure our peer countries not having the mass shootings, gun violence of the US is a factor too.

When I passed the ASVAB with flying colors the recruiter told me most of his potential recruits either fail the ASVAB or the physical requirements, he said it was like 80%. My oldest daughter told me she wanted to join but she was 8 pounds over weight, I told her if she couldn't lose 8 pounds to stay away from the Army.
