I think there has to be a point where it's accepted that the greater good has to trump personal entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I love firearms and own firearms, but I also have absolutely no problem keeping them in a safe and registered with the authorities. With great power comes great responsibility and in so many different aspects of life, responsibility has lapsed and had to be enforced legislatively and I think it's long overdue for that to happen in the U.S.

Neither did those people in Australia. Would you have "absolutely no problem" with your authorities claiming that the next mass shooting warrants them coming to your home and confiscating all your guns based on what someone else did?

Make all guns disappear . By raiding every home, guns shops, take all the guns and bullets and burn them.Don't allow them in the United States either. But I'm guessing that illegal or something. So nothing will stop the shootings.

Could we start with yours first?
COP: Where are your guns?
YOU: I don't have any!
COP: Stop lying to me! We know you have them!
YOU: No, honest! I don't have any!
COP: Tell us where they are or we're going to tear this house apart!
YOU: No! Please!
COP: (Starts ransacking everything you own, causing thousands of dollars in damage)

Step 1. More guns, give everyone more guns, especially the mentally unhinged.
Step 2. Glorify the perpetrators to inspire more unhinged people.
Step 3. Never, ever, ever, ever suggest that we need some sort of common sense regulation.
Step 4. Blame all Muslims. It doesn't matter if a Muslim was involved at all or not.
Step 5. If the perp is a white Christian male, make sure to never describe it as a terrorist act.
Step 6. Blame the victims by saying that this wouldn't have happened had they been armed to fight back.
Step 7. Wave the flag and talk about how important the Constitution is, but only the 2nd Amendment. There are no other amendments worth talking about.
Step 8. Blame all Muslims.
Step 9. Ignore the obvious problems, disregard facts, and make sure to never learn anything.
Step 10. America.

I was hoping there was a point to be made at the end of your post. But it ended without one.

Okay. It's too soon to start preventing more of such events. In that case, why don't we default to Orlando? Or San Bernardino? Or Newtown? Or Kingsport? Or Aurora? Or Fort Hood? Or DeKalb? Or Red Lake? Or Blacksburg? Or Littleton? Or Columbine?

Well, you do realize that each situation is unique, right? For example, San Bern, Orlando, and Fort Hood were all terrorist related. I know it doesn't sound easy and would require some actual work, but if you wanted to make the general problem less frequent, you need to start looking at each individual situation and not just cry and demand we ban guns cause they're loud and scary.

And every single shooter is very different. Each shooting occurs on a different day as well, so there's not only the personal factors but also the time factors. And we don't really know much about the trends associated with the WEATHER of each shooting.

There are a huge number of variables and, dare I say, perhaps completely insoluble even with a computer the size of the entire universe. Just too many things that are different.

The only commonality is access to guns and that isn't much to go on.

I think we should stop talking about these shootings as if there's anything we can do. It's just part of living in the modern era and living in the USA.

I think from here on out the President and all Government Officials should be banned from offering their prayers and condolences to the families of the victims because it makes it seem like people don't WANT the mass shootings to continue to happen.

The sooner we accept that there's a higher than average chance of dying because of these mysterious "shootings" here in the US the sooner we can move on to solving problems that have a solution.

You're jumping the gun (no pun intended) don't you think? What could we have done to prevent Orlando?

Why not wait for all of the facts until we start trying to decide how to prevent another one?

EXACTLY! We need to know the WHY's. Because, you know, perhaps there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for why a guy bashed out two windows in a hotel and rained death down on a concert.

In the end we know all we need to know: a guy with some serious problems and a few screws loose or missing took an armory up to his room and shot hundreds of people indiscriminately. In other words: "nothing to see here, just another day here in the USA".

Orlando? Are we still talking about ancient history? That's in the past. No time to dwell on the past. Let's look forward. Unless it's to dwell on the present tragedy at which point it's too soon.

You can't prevent it, you can only reduce the chances of it happening. Which in this case, a better public health system or more specifically mental health system.

Well, to be fair, the NRA has been pushing mental health care improvement. But I doubt they'd support a surcharge on all gun and ammunition purchases to support that. The IMPORTANT thing is we can blame the mentally ill and be done with it all!

If anything we should have a REGISTRY of the mentally ill in the USA. It's much better than some sort of bizarre registry of gun owners in the USA. That's just creepy.

Considering how much the government already spies on us (go look up PRISM), I'm not exactly sure. Only thing I can think of that could lessen it, but not eradicate it, is to weaken all forms of identitarian politics. That doesn't mean not being proud of who you are, but both sides of the political spectrum has been using it to cut up enough chunks of the population to win elections, despite how damaging it is to us as a society.

Yes, that's what I meant and not stuff like how a guy supposedly not interested in guns figured out how to modify a semi-automatic to an automatic, or obtain them illegally.

The shooter in LV wouldn't have been on it. So that doesn't solve the problem you seem to be trying to solve.

I was just having fun with the point. You see, we always need to know so much more than we ever will. Because the problem is so intractable and there is no obvious way to make it better.

Look at our ongoing obsession with understanding Newtown or Orlando or Aurora. Oh, wait, we only talk about them now after the latest mass shooting.

It gets really boring hearing people tell us how much their prayers and tears go out to the families. We don't really care as a nation...at least the people most capable of making the necessary changes don't. But they are quick to tear up and choke up and act like it was all such a surprise.

Gosh! I suspect it will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN! Better build up the tears and prayers for the next one.

But you have to admit a registry of the mentally ill would make us feel a lot better. The mentally ill are really bad hombres. It's the only thing we CAN do. Nobody in the USA actually cares about the rights of the mentally ill. Certainly not as much as we care about gun ownership rights.

Cops don't ask if we have guns or not. They just raid our homes and belongings. And take the guns.

Owning a firearm is a luxury. Would I be frustrated? Sure. Would I lose sleep over it? Not a wink.

Maybe that's the way it is in the UK. I guess some people value what they have as a right rather than a luxury.

Then I'll take what you said as being meant as sarcastic:

And look at the horrors the folks in the UK live with! It looks like a horrible place what with all the wild unicorns and black knights running around hacking off people's limbs and stuff.

Have you been having any terrorist attacks there? Have you gun laws prevented them?
