It sure has been too soon for a really long time.
It's perfect. You just say "it's too soon" until the next one happens, then say "it's too soon" because of that one, and so on.

Change avatar pictures, post sad comics on twitter, have a futile debate about gun regulations, focus on the fact that some of the victims helped other victims and celebrate them, get distracted by the next catastrophe.

We could always go back to talking about kneeling NFL players.

You can't prevent it, you can only reduce the chances of it happening. Which in this case, a better public health system or more specifically mental health system.

Well this shooter was in his 60s, hadn't really raised flags till now from what I understand. Now I agree with you that a better public health system, better mental health care is sorely needed. Idk how much that would have done to prevent this massacre.

Step 1. More guns, give everyone more guns, especially the mentally unhinged.
Step 2. Glorify the perpetrators to inspire more unhinged people.
Step 3. Never, ever, ever, ever suggest that we need some sort of common sense regulation.
Step 4. Blame all Muslims. It doesn't matter if a Muslim was involved at all or not.
Step 5. If the perp is a white Christian male, make sure to never describe it as a terrorist act.
Step 6. Blame the victims by saying that this wouldn't have happened had they been armed to fight back.
Step 7. Wave the flag and talk about how important the Constitution is, but only the 2nd Amendment. There are no other amendments worth talking about.
Step 8. Blame all Muslims.
Step 9. Ignore the obvious problems, disregard facts, and make sure to never learn anything.
Step 10. America.

Why not wait for all of the facts until we start trying to decide how to prevent another one?

Or... you know, at least until we know how and why.:doh1:

Okay. It's too soon to start preventing more of such events. In that case, why don't we default to Orlando? Or San Bernardino? Or Newtown? Or Kingsport? Or Aurora? Or Fort Hood? Or DeKalb? Or Red Lake? Or Blacksburg? Or Littleton? Or Columbine?

With the current division in the U.S. at critical mass, I honestly don't see how any change can happen now. The divisions are too deep.

Gun regulation is too ingrained in political identity now and it appears that most folks in the U.S. are far, far too entrenched in their own political identity that there is no room for compromise.

It is a shame, because in times like the other night, nothing can be done but sweep up the mess, get rid of the blood, bury the bodies and wait for it to happen again. And it will happen again.

Sorry, but prayer at this point is an empty gesture. Prayer hasn't been in short supply; action, on the other hand, has been.

You forgot the step about Obama personally swooping down in a FEMA helicopter to personally confiscate firearms and carting said resident off to a FEMA camp where they'll be indoctrinated as socialist Muslims.

Strange this only seems to happen in ONE OECD country with any regularity then, since you can't stop it and all.

? How would it have helped in this case?

Again, as I encountered in another thread, the mentality of this sort of thing needs to shift from reactive to proactive.

Naturally there will be people that slip through the cracks, but a well-funded, broader and better-equipped mental health service could certainly help in certain cases.

Mental health services are woefully overlooked in most developed countries, but in a country with the current problems the U.S. is facing, mental health can't be ignored for much longer but progress is stifled by the pay-to-play health service the U.S. has.

Has anything ever been done in a past mass shooting after all the facts were known?
Yes, many states have adopted much stricter gun laws, such as my state did several yrs. ago. Some people were really upset by it too, we're rednecks a'know. But more of us saw it as the moral thing to do.

I do think there should be tougher consequences for parents who leave guns where kids can get to them.

I agree with your post. But it doesn't appear at this time that in this particular case it would have made a difference. This guy wasn't strapped for cash, he hadn't had problems with law enforcement, etc.

Mental illness a common trend among the people who commit massive killing here in the USA.

I think there has to be a point where it's accepted that the greater good has to trump personal entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I love firearms and own firearms, but I also have absolutely no problem keeping them in a safe and registered with the authorities. With great power comes great responsibility and in so many different aspects of life, responsibility has lapsed and had to be enforced legislatively and I think it's long overdue for that to happen in the U.S.

Banning all guns is clearly not the right move, but to say no changes at all should be made... that's not acceptable.

I'm glad your friends saw it as a necessary thing, even if it was a necessary evil.

Didn't Jefferson want the Constitution to be reviewed/amended every 19 years because he felt it wrong for the current generation to be ruled by the laws of the past generation? Times change, society changes, people change... It's time to rethink.

Make all guns disappear . By raiding every home, guns shops, take all the guns and bullets and burn them.Don't allow them in the United States either. But I'm guessing that illegal or something. So nothing will stop the shootings.

Or Orlando? Or San Bernardino? Or Columbine? Or Newtown?

Political action? Legal action? Social action? Personal action?

Or should we even bother? Do we simply resign ourselves to going through these motions again in another 6 months or so? Or are we counting on these kinds of incidents to just go away?

Thoughts?

There is nothing we can do. It is a complete mystery why mass shootings keep happening. There is no way to even understand where the bullets come from. They just seem to materialize inside people and make them dead.

The thing that scares me the most is that no one knows where the bullets come from and why they go into people and make them dead.

I suppose we could increase the cost of the bullets but that doesn't solve the problem of how the bullets get from the WalMart and into people.
