  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

Well, that's good. Simply believing hell is the correct Biblical interpretation is different from actually using it as a means of control over others somehow. It reminds me of the Precious Moments story Bible that I was given as a little boy - you know, the kind that just takes some parts of the Bible and writes them in the form of short stories? After carefully reading it over just a few years ago, I could tell that the writers adhered to the traditional view of what happens to unbelievers in the end just like the majority of Christians do, but they never wrote about hell as any kind of threatening tone or Bible- thumping, you know? This book was meant to be for little children, naturally, so instead the writing encouraged kids to come to believe in and serve Christ, stating far more about the goodness that results from Christ's deed at the Cross, than the inevitable consequence of death and separation that comes with choosing not to believe. Just, basically, I thought this book had the right idea by gently nudging children towards hearing and learning about Jesus Christ with an encouraging tone of good news rather than fearmongering to any degree.
I had similar Bible story books, very fond memories - no fear of hell from them but instead a very loving picture painted.
Same in my church's Sunday school and lessons, all very much about how God loves them deeply and forgives them (when they disobey mom and dad or fight with siblings lol) and other sorts of things.

Adults... well, I'm still learning the right approach adults are to talk to one another about Christ, grace, hell, heaven... I've heard two sides of the coin and I'm not yet convinced of either. Christ came not to condemn though, but to save (John 3:17)... so I try to keep that sort of thing in mind when talking to others about Jesus.

Yet Bill Nye edits one of his quite scientifically accurate piece on gender and how it's shaped by chromosomes to make you make or female. He's now all for the 70 genders going around now.

Gender is an issue where both ends of the spectrum are both partially right and partially wrong. Sex and gender, while often used interchangeably in common speech, are not exactly the same thing in the realms of biology and psychology. Sex is your physical anatomy, and it's either male, female, or intersex. Gender is your social roles based on your sex (role), psychological traits, your personal identification of one's own gender based on an internal awareness (identity), and how you express these psychological traits (expression). In the vast majority of people, these two things align, but for a small group of people, they do not, and when that occurs, it is called Gender Dysphoria. Now, this actually is only a very, very small percentage of the population (0.01% of males and 0.0025% of females), but in recent years has sort of become trendy to be this way. I often say that it's become "like gluten intolerance, it's become trendy to pretend you have an issue, but on the other hand, some people actually have one." The people who do have one are usually not the ones going around about 76 genders and all of that Tumberlina nonsense.

That's where those people get it wrong, they fail to account for individual differences and think those differences are an entirely different expression itself and therefore gender. These concepts we have for our genders in our society are actually fairly broad and can encompass many different personalities and variations of interests. In other words, they're not talking about differences in gender, but differences in personality and interests within gender, and trying to make every distinction possible to be its own independent gender. That's why almost every one of those gender expressions (bigender, gender fluid, pangender, etc.) is not recognized by any major psychological organization like the APA or NIMH, or even the WHO.

Now, that does not mean there is only two ways that gender can vary or that there's only two genders. There are cultures that have been and that still exist today with more than two genders, and it's always been that way, and in every society there is evidence that there are some people who do not identify with with some or all of the of the aspects of the gender assigned to their biological sex. People who do not fit into their society's aspects of gender exists everywhere and have existed throughout time.

That's why gender is less of a binary dichotomy, but more of a cluster of various psychological traits that culture says "that's this", especially considering that psychology is showing that men and women are really not that psychologically different when you take cultural differences away. It seems to be less of an issue of being some kind of different gender, but just have different traits that's different than the majority of men or women. Yes, it's true that there's not all of these different genders and all, but it's also true that just because you are not like most men or women doesn't mean you are an entirely different gender.

For some reason these lines from the Voluspa have been in my head:
"Brothers will fight and slay each other,
Sisters' sons will betray their kin;
Hard it is on earth, great (wantoness),
Axe-age, sword-age, shields are cloven,
Wind-age, wolf-age, ere the world falls;
No man will then spare another.

On Buzzfeed people are going after a bigoted Trump supporter.

Fine and all, but they're also making fun of him for being short. Like there isn't fat female Trump supporters.

Equality means we can go after them for their weight right? It's not equality if we can go after men's physical faults but not women's..

Don't ever expect for me to have any compassion or care for women's body issues when you do not have any for mine. As for me, the lid is closed on that one. I was body shamed for my height for years, I'm never going to all of a sudden have compassion for other people's body image issues. For me equality is making sure everyone is equally mocked and thrown in the gutter. It's the only realistic equality I can ever hope to achieve.

Of course people will call me a bigot for it. Like how dare I not want a society where only short men can be mocked. How dare I want to direct the angry steam into multiple directions so short men do not receive the brunt of it..

Is there an overweight woman equivalent to this joke? If not should we start one?

What do you call a Tumblr user at an all-you-can-eat buffet?

Hungry hungry hippo.

Good enough for you?

I'm thinking about how stupid I was to take courses out of my major (everyone said it was easy but I'm having difficulty). I'm thinking about the fact that I need a new phone because my current phone is cracked on the front glass AND on the back. I'm thinking about how cold it is where I live even though it's May - it's like 12 degrees which is 55 F. I'm also dreaming about graduating. :/

No. Lol..

A joke that fits more closely to the joke you just made about short men.

The idea is to discourage overweight women in the future from making similar jokes about short men, because every-time they do they are reminded of the overweight women equivalent jokes.

I'm actually trying to find sensible and workable solutions to short shaming.

"Hey, baby, want to play 'Hungry Hungry Hippo's'? All we need to do is go to an all-you-can-eat buffet."

I know for a fact that I would get slapped for this.
