The genealogy is exactly what we would expect to see to show that Jesus is the prophecized Messiah... now, considering that the Gospel writers had those very prophecies open in front of them...

We've seen the hoops that the Gospel writers were willing to jump through to make it appear that Jesus fulfilled all those prophecies... some of their efforts strain credibility far more than others.
The bible shows over 300 scriptures that were fulfilled.

Where's the problem? Creation by evolutionism with the devils influence isn't biblical. You need to add to the bile to make that work.

Secondly the bible presents Satan (Lucifer) as being in the garden in an unfallen state. Sometime after creation Lucifer fell and became Satan.
Where does it say Satan was in Eden in an unfallen state? I already showed how your verse doesn't say that.

Also, it's not a question of biblical, it's a question of does it fit with the bible, and the natural world. Only together is it true.

If you only believe in the bible, then you don't believe in maths. There are no negative numbers in the bible.

Genesis can only be taken literal. It's the only logical way.

In the beginning God created. It doesn't get any more literal than that. It then tells how he created it, literal aswell... all literal. It's put forth as a fact not anything else.

Genesis presents itself as historical narrative. The real question is: "Why a non-literal Genesis?"
1. Because Moses wrote about it thousands of years after Adam was created.
2. It is the only thing in the bible that was not witnessed directly by a human.
3. Because multiple disciplines of science come to a similar conclusion on the age of the universe
4. Because death has been around for millions of years (if you prove this wrong you win a Nobel prize)

When the christian view is that the bible is the inspired word of God....it stands to reason that Paul got it right for his time and our time.
How inspired the Bible is is up for debate though. Now I didn't say "how much of the Bible" is up for debate, but how directly He gave the words to the people that wrote it down. Since the various authors in the Bible have their own unique styles, it stands to reason God didn't use people as a pen to write God's thoughts word for word.

So if God told Paul, "Tell them to do this" and Paul told the People "Do this because..." that isn't outside the range of possibilities, in my mind at least, of just how inspired the Bible is.

When Moses wrote Genesis, in what way did God give him that information? Did He tell him to write Genesis word for word the way it is, or did He reveal creation to Him in a dream, and Moses wrote it down. The Genesis account may very well be Moses' best attempt at putting to words a vision that God gave him and I wouldn't expect Moses to get that completely accurate.

As a reminder, this isn't about what the best way to read Genesis is, it's merely about what's plausible. That's why I asked in the beginning of the thread, "what's the harm"? Not because if there's no harm then theistic evolution is correct, but because it would be plausible that they are correct. Sure, I'm hypothesizing about things that I have no information to back up like how Moses was given the information about creation, but there's no information to be had, so I'm merely stating plausible possibilities, not likely possibilities.

I don't want people to get the wrong idea that I'm telling people how they ought to read their Bible. Moreso I may make the case that both ways might be acceptable. Although even I haven't reached that conclusion yet.

If Paul considered his own writings to be similarly inspired... I see nothing to indicate that Paul ever assumed that his letters, which were private correspondence to the various church leaders, to ever be made public, I find it unlikely that he would glibly declare himself "inspired."
Well to further complicate matters, there are times in those letters when he says, "the Lord says..." and there are times when he says, "I say, not the Lord says..." so it's hard to take a stance on how inspired those letters should be considered. I think most take a stance that by default it is inspired unless stated otherwise, but since he says it both ways, it might be the other way around, or Paul himself might not have known when he was or wasn't inspired or he did know and didn't think it was important to mention the other times...

Lotta questions about ol' Paul there.

Do you know the reaon for the linage?
I know that part of it is to trace his lineage back to David who was King of Israel, and that's still the same with a non-literal interpretation of Genesis. And I think it is also to trace His origins back to the beginning of mankind, which I think is still okay with a non-literal interpretation as long as it doesn't matter that the origins of mankind were named "Adam" and "Eve". If there's more (and I expect there is) I'd like to find out about it though.

It's not all literal. When God says they will die that day, He's talking about a spiritual death. And when the prophecy is made about bruising the heel and the snake, that isn't about a literal person stepping on a literal snake. So if some of it is figurative at all, it leaves the door open for more of it to be. Maybe it isn't, that's what I'm trying to find out, but it's possible if we only look at Genesis.

Looks like I got Matthew 19:4 mixed up with Mark 10:6. Jesus' teaching about marriage and divorce, in Matthew 19, is repeated in Mark 10 and Mark 10:6 says, "But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’"
That's clearer. But like I said, we have to assume at least a little fluidity in the word "beginning" since Adam and Eve weren't around in the beginning of all creation. So that beginning could still apply specifically to people only and not to creation as a whole.
No we don't take Daniel's prophetic visions literally, as I'm pretty sure, we're not going to literally see a lion, with eagles wings, rise up out of the sea, but comparing Daniel's prophetic visions to the creation account in Genesis is comparing apples to oranges. The Bible is written in many different styles, with Daniel's prophetic visions being written in the apocalyptic literary style, which by it's nature of being clothed in symbolism, is not to be taken literally, while on the other hand, the creation account in Genesis is written as a historical narrative, which is to be understood literally.
True, they aren't a good comparison, it is merely one example of many in the Bible that God conveys information to people in a way that is figurative. There have been a few other posts around here talking about how Moses received the information about creation and how he decided to write about it. Maybe it was a dream, maybe it was a vision. If it was anything like that I'm sure it was confusing to have the revelation of God's handiwork given to him. I think it's less likely, given the various writing styles found throughout the Bible, that God told Moses what to write, word for word.

Now if Daniel receives a confusing vision about future events and has no idea what they mean at the time, all he can do is try to describe the vision accurately. If Moses receives a vision about past events and has a hard time understanding them as he receives them, he might still try to piece it together the best way he knows how.

I'm going to keep saying it in hopes I don't offend anyone, but this isn't about what the best way to read the Bible is, it's about what's plausible. So don't think I'm trying to prove figurative is right, and literal is wrong. Since I don't know a lot on the matter, but I've learned quite a bit from the thread already, I don't have a solid stance for myself yet either. I'd call it a "leaning" maybe.
Nothing here about not trusting God, just saying that the text should be understood in the manner that it was written.
You're right. My mistake. You talked about trusting the Bible and I incorrectly made the jump to trusting God. But I still think that you can trust that Genesis has an important lesson to teach without taking it literal, and you can trust that the NT is an accurate portrayal of the life and death and life of Jesus all at the same time.

One reason would be...it's what the bible teaches.
Or it's simply how the Bible phrased it. That's why I want to get deeper into the issue than just looking at the surface of Genesis and making a conclusion.

Genesis presents itself as historical narrative. The real question is: "Why a non-literal Genesis?"
Just look at all the animosity between Christians on the matter. I've seen both sides of the debate accuse the other side of calling God a liar. If the idea of a non-literal Genesis is even plausible without causing any harm to the core tenants of Christianity then there's no need for the aggressive debate and people can get on with more important matters. Plus, for those who accept the evidence of an old earth, an old universe, and evolution, needing to accept Genesis as literal is just another barrier to faith.

That's a thought...God could have revealed Himself to humans after they were sufficiently "evolved"...but that's not what the bible teaches. That's another place where the Theo-Evo sect needs to explain how our sin nature came to be.....and extra biblical material that contradicts scripture is required.

They would need something like a sin mutation to occur...which would be a natural process rather than a deliberate act of disobedience such as described in Genesis.
Well what is sin nature? I mean, I know it's the idea that we sin naturally, but what is the cause of it? Is it in our DNA, or is it something metaphysical? If it's the latter, that I suspect it is, then it wouldn't need to arise from some mutation through evolution. That would still be the metaphysical aspect of Genesis that all Christians would acknowledge.

So God picked a time when humans were sufficiently evolved. He revealed Himself, but he also had to give them a soul. Animals don't have them, right? That would be the "breath of life" part of Genesis that is only in reference to humans, which fits rather well since later when death is mentioned it is talking about spiritual death. God gave them instructions, they willfully ignored those instructions, and then that was the Fall. From a literal Genesis standpoint, is it their physiology that changed in gaining a "sin nature" or is it metaphysical? I would guess it is more akin to a spiritual problem that has an effect on the flesh, but my guess may not be all that educated. Still sounds plausible from a theistic evolutionary perspective though, and it still retains a need for Jesus to come along and mend the rift between God and humans that humans caused through disobedience.

From where I stand this is biblical.

Perhaps the students weren't ready at the time? You don't teach algebra to pre-schoolers.

Does disobedience require a natural process, or a sociological one?

Well to further complicate matters, there are times in those letters when he says, "the Lord says..." and there are times when he says, "I say, not the Lord says..." so it's hard to take a stance on how inspired those letters should be considered. I think most take a stance that by default it is inspired unless stated otherwise, but since he says it both ways, it might be the other way around, or Paul himself might not have known when he was or wasn't inspired or he did know and didn't think it was important to mention the other times...

Lotta questions about ol' Paul there.

Yeah, Paul was a pretty interesting fellow... and you're right that he makes a point to differentiate between his personal opinions and the "official" doctrine... at least some of the time.

I'm well aware that not all Christians ascribe to a literal interpretation of Genesis, but I'm curious why some feel it is important to retain the literal interpretation.

AvgJoe has already done a good job of explaining from a scriptural/doctrinal standpoint why a literal interpretation of the Genesis account is necessary. Death, sin, and God's redemption of fallen humanity through Christ all hinge on the account being fundamentally literal.

Basically, my thinking is that Jesus hid the truth in parables, so why wouldn't God?

Scripture is the revelation of God's will and truth (as far as He has deemed it fit to share these things with us); Scripture is not given by God with the intent of confusing and obscuring His will and truth from those who wish to know it.

Not everything in the Bible is to be taken literally, so we have to make decisions on what is literal and what is allegorical. What harm results from taking an allegorical approach to Genesis?

AvgJoe has explained this already. Some of the most fundamental aspects of the story of Redemption are eroded and confused by taking an allegorical view of the Genesis account of Creation and the Fall of Man.

Selah.
