  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How can the grace of God be resisted by some yet received by others?

[13]You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

I love God's word.

1 Timothy 1:13-17
[13]even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief.
[14]Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.
[15]This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all.
[16]But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
[17]All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.

How good it is to read God's word.

2 Timothy 1:9-12
[9]For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.
[10]And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.
[11]And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News.
[12]That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.

I am grateful for God's grace, given to me by God's choice.

Titus 3:4-7
[4]But—When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love,
[5]he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.
[6]He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.
[7]Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

Thanks.

I'll share a favorite passage.

Ephesians 2:1-10
[1]Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.
[2]You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.
[3]All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.
[4]But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,
[5]that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
[6]For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
[7]So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
[8]God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
[9]Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
[10]For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

What translation is that?

What is it, you were once dead, or were you given life when Jesus was raised? You can't have both.

I wonder why nothing is said about 'coming' to Jesus to have life. Did Jesus change His mind after Paul arrived? Was Jesus telling us the truth?

Why did leave out any words of life from Jesus? Was this on purpose? Now show me where Jesus said these things which Paul said.

Ew, Jesus (God) gives us all the Scripture. You have no reason to reject the verses that show God choosing.

On top of this, I already showed how John 6:37 also teaches that God chose us.

There is nothing left to say on this matter. You are clearly rejecting Scripture in an effort to retain your argument.

You showed me Paul's way of life; later today I will show you Jesus' way of life. Then we can compare them.

This doesn't show predestination.

We know that we are co-heirs with Christ to the Father.

You reject a lot of scripture yourself to stay with the theory that Jesus died only for the sins of the elect. So don't act like your theology reconciles perfectly with the Bible, because it doesn't.

Jesus gave Paul the words to write. We have just discussed Jesus words in John. At this point you are openly rejecting God's word. There is nothing more to say when you reject God's word to maintain an errant theology.
Bowing out gracefully. But bowing out nonetheless

It's noticeable that you and bling have no ability to grasp how dead men cannot respond. You both have talked around it or ignored it.

What is it that you reject about being dead in trespasses and sins? What is it that you reject about God making people alive?

I make no excuses for God or for God doing the work of saving people.

Read the whole prodigal son story.

Luke 15: 17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

Jesus would use the very best words to convey the meaning and Jesus did not say: “God brought him to his senses”, but Jesus did say “he came to his senses”. How did he do it if he was in a dead state or can you do this if you are in a dead state? We know the young man was in a dead state because:

Luke 15: 24 “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again…” and Luke 15:32 “…because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again;…”

The Father (representing God) does not say “We thought he was dead” or “was like dead”.

There is not a definition given for being “Spiritually dead” so we cannot say exactly what that means, but from this passage Jesus is teaching us a spiritually dead person can repent.

It is a lot more complex than just looking at it and giving one meaning to “spiritually dead”. In one since the young man does not have Godly type Love and Paul teaches us (1 Cor. 13) without this Godly type Love you can do nothing of value (it is worthless) so in that since what the young man did in even repenting was “worthless” of no value. The young man is actually being “motivated” by self seeking reasoning, but it does cause him to swallow his pride. The acceptance of the Father’s Love is really not “doing” something but more allowing something to be done to you.

In other words, the young son did not really “do” anything in his dead state, but did allow the father to do stuff for him. The Young man could have gone on in the pigsty trying on his own to recover (maintaining some pride), but that would be really trying to stay alive by doing something as compared to giving up (being a walking dead person).

Except the prodigal son in the parable STARTED WITH THE FATHER AS HIS SON.

The world's population as a whole does not, but STARTS as sons of disobedience.
(and they keep doing as their father does)
And many other things have been overlooked and mis-spoken as well....

For other threads though, or for other places, and other times.

We discussed this already, bling.

The prodigal was already chosen. He was already a son. He is not someone from the village who just shows up and chooses the land owner to be his father.

If you are going to attempt to use a parable to build your theology around, at least set the table correctly.

There seems to be nothing left to say. I have provided an ample amount of Scripture passages to express why I believe God is Sovereign and chooses to redeem sinners as He wills. This is enough. The rest is between you and God.

You have it backwards.
I could not resist when God called.

Saving grace, grace unto salvation cannot fail.
The effectual, irrevocable call is always successful.
In parables people refused the invitation.
