  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are you growing?

I have lots of other things growing in my garden that I'm looking forward to though. Im training sweet peas.

Hello there Goodbook, Our garden is too small for a veg plot but here are some of the the best and brightest showing at the moment. How is it you're doing sweet peas in winter? Is it that mild?
May the growth be with you,

Hopefully closer to God, every day.

My garden is huge but Erin helps. Bell peppers, beans, corn, peas, potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, squash, turnips (oh I miss my sweet Dad!), other beans, radishes, watermelon, and cucumbers.

Good eating now and for those below-zero winter days when you think about going to the store and your truck gives you the stink-eye.

All good edible things

Cool thread idea Goodbook. I love working in the garden and growing things. Can't wait till I retire so I will have more time out there. Currently I have four varieties of hops (for beer making of course :) ), also a large trellis of Marion Berries, some tomatoes, strawberries, artichoke, green beans and sunflowers. We also have a pear tree and a pomegranate bush.

Here are my hop towers. The posts are 13 ft. high. Notice the weight of the plants has pulled the climbing ropes down lower. From left to right here are Chinook, East Kent Golding, and Fuggles. The ekg is on its third year while the others are on their first years.

I love the mammoth variety of sunflowers. they are awesome to behold, and a picture of Gods provision and a message of prosperity for us. These are currently higher than the roof, so prob 10 - 12 feet right now.

My sunflowers didnt grow as tall and they got eaten by ants and aphids. But i did manage to save seeds.

Is hops the main ingredient for beer? Or can it be made from other things..like ginger..
Ive seen hops growing like crazy at the community garden but i dont grow it myself or drink beer.

Im trying to coax a passionfruit vine into growing, it produced one fruit last year...
Also I have a choko vine sprouting.

Last season I had ornamental gourd and melon.
Im quite fond of vines. Also a grapevine.

The main ingredient for beer is malted grain which is very sweet to the taste, even after boiling for an hour. Hops provide the bittering agent to balance the sweetness of the grains. They also have a distinct flavor but it is part of the bitter side of the palate.

I find it funny that people retire only to work in the garden. Why not work in the garden first.
Then if for any reason you need to retire from that you could work another job.

Only because I'm usually whooped after a full day/week of work and don't even want to go out there, much less keep up with the speed that the weeds grow and all the pruning and upkeep needed. My garden is very wild looking. It's all about time

Sweet peas are blooming! I picked enough for a vase yesterday.

Also i have sown cosmos and wild flowers. I also planted a grannys bonnet (columbine or aquileja) yesterday.

Today will see whats going down at the community garden, as have a working bee. My veges are eggplant and capsicum. Everyone has chosen one or two favourites they want to grow this season.

Just want to add I sowed carrots today.
we also have radish, and I have to put in sunflowers.

We harvested red onions.
It was a busy day.
Snails or something tried to munch my eggplants so I've put lavender mulch around them, hopefully that will stop them crawling over my eggplants. Also borage.

We have tomatoes started for the garden. I still want to choose some to grow in pots. Have seeds ready, it's getting about time to start most. It's going to be up to my husband this year, as I'm going to be recovering from surgery for too much of the early season. I don't know what-all he's got.

I've been concentrating on my houseplants, getting them in good shape, repotted, set up to be easy to care for while I'm recovering. I'm putting in a few flowers just because - dianthus and verbena so far, along with the gerbera daisies and daylillies. Hopefully the phlox and I forget what all is planted out there will come back. :) Most of the roses are back and blooming. Honestly, mini roses seem among the most reliable plants here, which surprises me. I will probably plan to put on more. I've got about a half-dozen or so scattered around so far.

My tibouchina appears not to have survived the winter though, and it should have. I'm very disappointed. It's the most expensive thing I planted too, and a favorite. And the squirrels have killed my Rose of Sharon trees. Again, a big disappointment. Those were also favorites, and given to me by a friend.
