Do you know what a Baptist believes about scripture and are you convinced? If so, why do you use "Christian" or "Non-Denominational" as your "Faith?" Are you really not a Baptist and just thought you'd drop in and post?

Thanks,

jm

I am not educated on denominations enough to say I belong to a single one...

I believe in God, and that I am useless without Him.
I think, that at least, we can all agree on.

Good answer Brianna. I can understand your situation and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. You will find plenty of great response (a few not so great hehe) right here in the Baptist forum.

Yours in the Lord,

jm

I purposely avoided labels for a long time because I didn't want it to be a narrative I became invested in and made Scripture fit with via loose or false interpretation.

That is, in my opinion, what a lot of people do because they're invested, be it culturally or otherwise, in a particular denomination or theology.

In the end I chose Baptist because it sums up my beliefs perfectly as a broad statement and 'headline' beliefs, and the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith further defines my beliefs in greater detail.

This describes my feelings perfectly.
I feel a lot of people compromise, or just don't know what they believe.

The only label I want is God's Child... :)

If we dropped the labels, I feel there would be so much less fighting between us...
Something, I imagine, the God we argue about finds disgusting...

Indeed.

I've met people questioning their faith at the fundamental level and yet they still maintained "all they knew was that they were a Catholic".

I am a Baptist because I believe that those who called themselves by many names throughout history and but came to known as Baptists all held to a distinctive set of beliefs concerning the truths of the Scriptures. They are now known as the Baptist distinctives.

Historic Baptisit Distinctives

Bible--the sole authority for faith and practice
Autonomy or independenc of the local church
Priesthood of all believers
Two offices
Pastor
Deacon
Individual soul liberty and responsibility
Separation of Church and State
Two ordinances
Believer's Baptism by Immersion
Lord's Supper
Saved, baptized, and serving members

That's how I sum it up for myself I was raised Baptist and associate most of my beliefs with the Baptist Church. I have a love for the denomination of my childhood and earlier adulthood just smaller issues caused me to walk away

I think I'll change my faith icon to something spicy, something different, something to get people talking. Then, after a while, I'll change it to something that will allow me to pretend to be just a vanilla Christian with no convictions, so I can post in multiple forums pretending I'm in agreement with everyone!!! hahaha

(sarcasm folks, plz chill, it was a joke)

I once considered the Calvinist icon but it implies paedobaptism so thought otherwise ^^

Maybe we need a Reformed icon.

I'll stick with Baptist. I just wish other Baptists used the icon. I think it would help point out the fakers who poster in the Baptist forum using non-denom and Christian when their theology doesn't look Baptist at all.

I am a die hard Baptist but use the Calvinist icon at the request of a poster in the Semper forum in order to be able to answer questions in the ask a Calvinist forum. i actually disagree with many things that John Calvin taught. But I am a Baptist so I tend to disagree with most people.

I use the Christian label now and have in the past because I can't figure out what denomination I am. I go back and forth between Catholicism and Southern Baptist... I like the mysticism of the Catholic Church but I fail to believe a lot of what they teach. I also fail to believe a bit of what the Baptist churches teach as well. For example, in the Catholic Church I don't believe in the Perpetual Virginity of marriage or the Doctrine of Transubstantiation. At the same time though, in the Baptist churches I have attended, I disagree that baptism is merely an ordinance or "sign of obedience". I am not sure what I believe on baptism, because in scripture it seems to make it obvious that baptism forgives sins and that we must be baptized for salvation. However, I also agree that having baptism as a requirement would make it a works salvation, and I believe that we are saved by faith alone...

I also have convictions that cause me to disagree with a lot of Baptists that are in the Reformed camp, I don't believe in all five points as defined in TULIP. I am more of a free-will guy... And the Catholic church doesn't seem to have a really well defined position on this stuff...

I always call this, "my theological web of confusion... "o_O

My theology is very Baptist, but as another poster already mentioned, I consider myself a Christian first and anything else second.

At least you're honest. Throughout the years I have changed my position on several theological beliefs.
I use to believe you could lose your salvation as well as free-will concerning salvation.

I try to be. The only way I feel that I can sort it all out is by discussing it with other Christians and prayer.

Many sicologists(sic) would have a heyday with this (in the error of human entanglements though).

Still...... may be something deeper ...... in Christ! Learning Him !
